3. Google Apps: Free Collaboration Tools for you and your team.
Google Apps: Free Collaboration Tools for you and your team. First it started with Gmail, next Google released Gtalk, a trimmed down instant messenger that isn't bloated with advertising and unnecessary features. Late last year Google tied all of these things into one, and launched their online office and collaboration suite known as Google Apps.

We've recently started using Google Apps for our own office, and what I find best is the simple way it allows us to collaborate. Your team can communicate and work together online. You can share a document, update the same spreadsheet, or add events to the same calendar. Whoever created the document or spreadsheet can choose who to share it with and whether that person can only view it or also contribute.

While Google Docs and Spreadsheets are not as feature rich as Microsoft Word and Excel, most of us only use a fraction of the features available in an office app and Google has found a fine balance between necessary features and ease of use.

As for your office email, Gmail can easily be set up to use your own domain and that's exactly how we've set it up. For example, any email you send to luke@interactivetools.com is received in my gmail account.

Google Apps is all online, so there's no software to download, and no maintenance or upgrades. If you're not using Google Apps yourself I recommend checking it out, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

4. Keep your Mozilla/Firefox Width Constant
Keep your Mozilla/Firefox Width Constant Have you ever noticed while designing a page in Mozilla or Firefox, when viewing a short page (no longer than your screen's height) there's no right scroll bar, but as soon as you click on a link that takes you to a longer page, the scrollbar appears, pushing your site a few pixels to the left.

If you've ever come across this problem before, Theo has a useful trick for making sure the scrollbar in your Mozilla/Firefox browser is always present.

Just add the following to your CSS style-sheet and you're good to go.

body { overflow: -moz-scrollbars-vertical; }

This is a great tip because if your site has short pages and long pages, going from one to the other causes the page to shift when the scrollbar appears or disappears. There are other ways to do it (setting height: 100.05%, for example), but this is Theo's current favourite. :)
5. Introducing Ingrid - New Team Member
Introducing Ingrid - New Team Member I'd like to introduce you to the newest member of the interactivetools.com team, Ingrid Molander. Ingrid is currently going through our Product Specialist training program. She's learning all about Article Manager, customer service, and how to deal with toughest support questions you can throw her way.

Before working with interactivetools.com Ingrid worked in high-end server and network support for 10 years, with some of those years spent at Big Blue (IBM). In her spare time she enjoys playing guitar, doing art stuff like painting and drawing, making websites, and reading books about history and sci-fi. She described it to me as "dorky stuff like that." :)

Her training isn't just limited to our products and support: we've also been teaching her how to play poker. At first she was getting a lot of tips and advice, but she's since managed to stare down a few of the veteran players. I wonder if it's beginner's luck or if her "I'm just learning" approach is just a ruse...

Anyhow, she's the new one, so if you call in and get a "interactivetools.com, you're speaking with Ingrid," go a little easy on her... or ask her the toughest question you have, it's good for her training. :)
6. Developer Resources
Developer Resources Here are a couple of useful resources for web developers and designers. Send me an email with YOUR favourite resources - I might be able to feature them in a future newsletter.
Layout Gala

Does "Click Here" Actually Help?
Although hyperlinks are usually pretty obvious ("I wonder why this text is colored and underlined?"), it's been proven time and time again that if you want someone to do something, you'll get the best results if you tell them exactly what to do.

30+ Firefox Add-ons for Web Developers & Designers
An excellent list of Firefox add-ons that can be of help when developing and designing websites.
