Question on searching

Hi everyone,

A client of mine wants me to set up a site for them similar to the link below

http://www.property-abroad.com/

Having recently used CMSB for another site I think that the new clients site would work well using CMSB except for one area that concerns me - the search facility

If you take a look at the link you will see that it has a multiple search facility with drop down option values

Is this something that CMSB can do or if not in that exact way, what could it do on a multiple choice level

Thanks - Mel

Re: [mel] Question on searching

Hi Mel,

There's a number of search engines on that site. Some of them would require some extra javascript and php coding to make them work exactly the same way.

For the location and region you can have it output all the regions and then use javascript to just show the ones that are under the location. There's some discussion about this here: http://www.interactivetools.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=60625#60625

So you're going to make sure you have time (and budget) to create that or go with a simpler search.

Hope that helps!

Hi Dave,

I should have said which search box - it is the Red one towards the top of the page where you can select 5 search parameters - location, region, prices from, prices to, num bedrooms

Or as an alternative you have under the samples section on listings manager http://www.my-french-house.com/

which has region, minimum price, maximum price search facility

Can either of these search alternatives be replicated in CMSB or will that type of search only work with listings manager

Thanks Mel

Hi Mel,

Yes, they can. Have a look at the CMS Builder search docs here for more info:
http://www.interactivetools.com/docs/cmsbuilder/viewer_search.html

If you have a look at the example page you linked to you'll notice that if you change the "Location" the values in the list for "Optional Region" change. That was the extra javascript part I was talking about. And that's possible too but a bit more work.

But yes you can have a search based on a multiple of pulldown values and min/max price, etc.

Hope that helps!

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply, now at least I know that we can do a search like the my-french-house site using CMSB I can begin coming up with a firmer quote for the client

I took a quick look at the documentation that you pointed me to, have a feeling that I may well be back in the forum in the new year asking for some further guidance on setting up the search box

Thanks for your help

Mel:)
