Pulling in records 'news feed'

I have created a 'news feed' style side bar on a site where the CMS pulls in the first 3 records from another section. This is all fine until I then try and repeat the process on the actual record page - so effectively duplicating (but with limitations) the same records. I want things to look consistent across the site hence why repeating this. Here is the page:
