webmaster becomes a host!

Hello there .. At one point i had 10+ sites that i developed and maintain so i thought like this: instead of paying a hosting company for all those sites i would get a server and host these sites which would result in more control and more income if not greater saving. I got me this Linux machine .. spent about 3 weeks just reading anything i can find on the net .. subscribed to half a dozen discussion boards .. problems kept coming .. i was so behined in my work .. patches to install .. things go wrong again .. i have no one to yell at .. i lost 2 customers .. and dropped 2 more .. i am as hectic as hell (it is hectic in hell isn't it?). So i asked the wrong guy for advise and he suggested a raq .. well .. i got a cobalt raq .. its easier to maintain yeah .. but i hate so much stuff about it. Anyhow .. I work alone and right now i wish i did not get my own server .. there are a couple of patches that i have not aoolied yet for the fear that something might go wrong and it could then take me days to revert or something. BTW, it feels good crying on your sholders guys So .. if ever, when does a webmaster become a host? Anybody else facing a similar situation? I do not plan on renewing when my contract expires .. so .. any suggestions? -------------- Sure you can spell it, but do you get it?

Hi, what do you not like about the cobalt RAQ? we have a few of them and they ROCK! best server i have ever used. It makes life so much easier for us than using a Microsoft server,( we dont thier garbage ) just curious as to your dislike of the raq

We used to use iserver.com (now viaverio.com) they have a "Virtual Private Server" setup where you share the box with other people but you have your own environment (a chroot'd jail) so you can edit your apache config, sendmail config, and basically do anything you could if it was your box. You can run mod_perl, mysql, etc and most things are super easy to install with the scripts they've setup. MySQL was something like 'vinstall mysql' from the shell. Moving forward, though, we've recently put a server in colocation for demo1.interactivetools.com (our online demos) and we pay a freebsd consultant to fix things when needed. Works out cheaper then us trying to do it ourselves. Managed solutions (like viaverio.com) are great, because you never have to worry about the security, hardware, etc. If something breaks it's their job to fix it. There's always caps on your resources though, and you pay for the convenience. Putting your own box in colo or hooking up with someone like rackspace.com gives you the ultimate flexability, but the hassle of maintaining your own box as well. For now it looks like we're moving towards going with colo, but then paying a consultant to help when needed. Dave Edis - Senior Developer interactivetools.com

Hiya WebGuys Mainly its the hassle associated with maintaining the server itself and following up with security issues and stuff. I work alone and my time is taken up by developing & designing. I just have no time to maintain the machine. Another problem i have is that some of my clients want SSH access ... and with cobalt i could not give them that without stopping them from browsing other sites directory. If i was woking with my own sites only, i would probably stayed with my raq. I have no plans for getting a Microsoft srvr... i like unix and i plan to stay with it. -------------- Sure you can spell it, but do you get it?

Hiya Dave Many thanks for replying. I do not really need to go as far as a colo server .. but the idea of VPS sounds good. I will have to read more about it. So its either Reselling or a VPS i guess. If its allowd, i would like to invite everyone to recommend few names that they have had experience with. Thanks so much. -------------- Sure you can spell it, but do you get it?
