Question about categories/subcategories

Hi,
I'm working locally on a business local directory structure and I'm wondering if I can create something like this (I bet I can, I just need some guidance in order to do so).
My goal its to display main categories and just a few subcategories below and the on each category page, all their subcategories at the top of the page. I've a few ideas but I just can't figure it out, in case you want me to share something else, just let me know.

Thanks for posting.
What I recommend is starting by having your page only display parent level categories.
That will involve a foreach loop to display each of the parent category names.
As you loop through each parent level category, you'll need to do a look up for sub categories whose parent number is currently being displayed.
Does that make sense?
