Permalinks best practice for deleting a page.

Hello,
A quick question lol.
What is the best practice seowise were I required to delete a page. Aka I have a dynamic page, it has been up a few months, then the client tells me they no longer stock this product and want the page deleted. Do I need to redirect the permalink to the index page or just delete the permalink as well as all the content etc in the cms relative to the page. (of course also delete it in my sitemaps)

Hi Kenny,
If the product is no longer stocked and they want it off the site, delete the permalink for that product.
Search engine will update their search indexes so that product won't appear in search results.
Also, on a side note, you can edit the way the 404 error page looks by editing the /permalinks_notFound404.php file in the permalinks directory or if you already have an existing styled 404 page, you can point to that page by modifying $alternate404Url in that same file.
