Creating Archive of Previous Articles

I have a ton of articles dating back to 1995. I would like to set up an archive using CMS Builder where the user can click the year the articles were published and then choose the month. This way a detail page comes up giving a list of articles for that month.

Any ideas.

Hi,

Where are your articles currently stored? Are they already in CMS Builder?

Let me know.

The articles are stored in a folder on the server. They were created by Article Manager. Article Manager placed them there as part of the publishing rules set up. I know where the articles are, I just would like to know how to construct the pages in CMS so people can find them.

If you go to www.earthchangesmedia.com/archives.php you will see how the page is arranged. Then when you click on a year, you will notice how the search feature of Article Manager is used. I wish to do the same thing but with CMS Builder. I need direction in order to do that.

Hi,

In order to have CMS Builder organize or access these articles, they would have to be in CMS Builder. Since Article Manager and CMS Builder use very different systems, this is a lengthy process.

For articles created in Article Manager, I would reccomend keeping your current archive page (http://www.earthchangesmedia.com/archives.php)

For articles created in CMS Builder, you could add a check box to your article section for "Archive". You can then modify your code so that archived pages, only appear on an archived page.

Hope this helps get you started.

My boss is planning on hiring someone to type in all past articles in CMS gradually over time. I guess I just wanted to know if there was an easy way to set up the page so people could find the articles. In other words, should I do it per year and month, or by search term.

Hi,

Once they're in CMS Builder, you can display them however you like. Organizing them by year and then month would probably be an easy way for users to read it I would think.

Hope this helps.

So can I create one page for year and when they click the link, another page would come up for month, and then they can click that link and show a list of article titles with a link to the actual article page? Or can I design a web page where I can have them choose a year and a month at the same time on one page, and then when they click submit, the results go to the page where the article is located. If so, how can I do that. I need step-by-step help until I get familiar enough with CMS to do it on my own.

Thanks for your help. You are really giving me good direction and I appreciate it.

Hi,

CMS Builder won't automatically create the pages for you, it will require some PHP programming.

It would be easier to help if I knew more about how you're storing information. Will all the articles be in the same section? How are you going to distinguish between an archived article and a new one?

Let me know and we'll see what we can do.

Hi,

So the articles are being stored in individual files in folders on the server? For CMS Builder to do searches on this information, it must first be entered into CMS Builder. You'd need to create an article section and enter in these articles.

Hope this helps.
