how does simple forum subscribe to Category updates work

I assumed that if a user was subscribed to a category update, they would get an email when a NEW thread is created within a category, but not when REPLIES are made to threads.
But it seems as if my users are getting an email for every new topic created AND for every reply (even though they are not subscribed to the specific thread).

Hi wizzle,
How it works is that if they subscribe to a category then they get notified of every post in that category (a reply is also considered a post) . It would be possible to have it work some other way, but it would take some custom coding.
