5. Google News: Gmail out of beta & Google Chrome OS (by Donna Brown)
|
I admit it, I'm a Google fangirl. I've been using Gmail and Google for Domains for ages, Google Reader helps me keep up to date with my RSS feeds, and I get a certain amount of glee whenever they change their header. I'm pretty sure if a mysterious yet simple and understated glass of unidentified grape-flavored liquid showed up in my house with the "Google" logo on it, I'd drink it without question.
So, I've been following two things of note from Google recently. One is that Google Apps is finally out of beta. Gmail in particular wore the "beta" tag for over 5 years. (Even we have a faster development cycle than that!)
What does that change? Nothing, save for the logo -- and even that, you can re-enable through the settings. But for products that have prided themselves on their everlasting beta labels, it's a bit of a shock to have them -- finally! -- admit that their software is ready for prime time. Even if it's been used that way since the day it hit beta.
(For the record, we subscribe to the more traditional definition of "beta" software, so make sure you keep a lot of backups when running CMS Builder betas, and I wouldn't recommend running them on your live site!)
Slightly less frivoulous than an edited image and some back-patting by Google is the Google Chrome OS. We mentioned here before when the Chrome browser was released, and a few of our staff have stayed on that bandwagon. I'm not quite ready to give up my beloved Firefox just yet, although I do use Chrome for my Gmail windows.
Anyway, Google has taken the browser concept one step further and is creating an entire operating system, designed to be lightweight, fast, and secure, and most importantly, aimed very directly at people who live their lives on the web. Well, that doesn't sound like anybody *I* know... oh wait...
I'm looking forward to see what they come up with. I'm not sure if it'll run my beloved World of Warcraft, so I don't know if I'll be able to make the switch, but surely we've got a spare device or two around here that I can install it on. This koolaid is delicious!
