3. Google Announces New Web Browser: Google Chrome
|
Google recently launched a new open source web browser called Google Chrome.
Google's main reason for a new browser is to create something that "can add value for users and, at the same time, help drive innovation on the web." Apparently, the new browser is "streamlined and simple" and "clean and fast". In fact, some of us in the office are already using it as our default browser!
One of the coolest things about the launch is how the browers' features were introduced in comic book form. Some of the most impressive features are:
- New JavaScript engine called V8 for faster performance
- "Special tabs" above the window, not below the address bar
- the ability to run each tab as a separate process, so if a site or action crashes one tab, the entire browser won't crash
- Address bar auto-completion
- Opera-like "Speed Dial" with thumbnails of your most visited 9 websites
- Web apps can be launched in their own window without addressbar/toolbar
The browser will initially be offered for Windows only, but Mac and Linux versions are on the way.

4. Internet Exploer 8 Beta 2 Released
|
If you're running Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1, you can now upgrade to Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2. While Beta 1 was primarily targeted at developers, Internet Explorer 8 beta 2 is a fully featured release targeted at regular web users.
Internet Explorer 8 already has several new features that IE 7 didn't, such as InPrivate Browsing which keeps IE8 from adding sites you visited to your browsing history, a Compatability View button which allows you to view websites that were designed for older browsers, and more.

5. Official Support For PHP 4 Ends
|
PHP 4 has finally reached the end of its official life. With the release of PHP 4.4.9, official support has ended, with the final security patch released on August 8th.
The good news is this gives web hosts who haven't already updated to PHP 5 one more reason to do so. In fact, PHP 5 has now been available for a few years (already 5.2.6) and if you are with a web host that hasn't upgraded you'll want to request that they do. With no support or future security fixes, the recommendation is for web hosts to move to the PHP 5 platform.
If you're a user of CMS Builder and your host has decided to stick with PHP 4 there's no need to worry. CMS Builder will continue to support PHP 4 until the majority of the hosts switch to 5. So even if your host is slow to switch you're still covered.
If you're a PHP 4 developer who hasn't begun working with PHP 5 yet, you'll likely find that converting a well designed application to PHP 5 requires only fairly minimal tinkering to function with the new version.
