Thanks for posting and welcome to the board!
htmlArea has actually been discontinued so we don't support it hear anymore. There is still a whole message board for the old htmlArea posts that you could have a look through:

It's setup as read only but you can search through it to see if anyone else had got the spell checker going. At the same time though, you could take a look through the rest of the site as it's mainly setup as a WYSIWYG editor directory and there tones of alternatives to htmlArea. I am sure you'll be able to find something that works.
How does that sound?
