search.cgi script causing server overload - Hosting company has locked me out of FTP and disabled script

I do hope someone can help me with an urgent query. The web host I am using for one of my clients tells me that the LM search.cgi script is causing high loads on the server and they've diabled it and locked me out of the FTP account. They tell me I need to confirm that I'll modify the script or remove it. Listings Manager is integral in my client's web site and I wouldn't even know how to modify a script. I've lost credibility with my client and I am strongly considering moving to a new web host. However, my client wants an assurance that we won't run into the same problems again if we do this. How can I guarantee this? I don't even understand why this has become a problem. There are about 670 products on the web site and the product categories rely on the search script. The site stats report an average of 33 customers a day on the home page - probably more throughout the site but it's not an exceptionally busy enterprise. Is it a case of needing an account with more bandwidth? I've tried getting this information out of the hosting company but they just won't answer the question. My concern is that this could happen again. I'm quite prepared to be upfront about this to another potential hosting company but I don't really know what to tell them and I don't have any hard facts and figures. I can't risk this happening again. I have a web host in mind offering 1000MB diskspace and 40GB bandwidth a month. Please can someone help. I really need some guidance.

Hi Annie! With less than 700 products and not a great deal of traffic, it doesn't sound like Listings Manager should be causing you any problems, unless your hosts server is drastically underpowered. It's not a bandwidth issue, just a "how much processing can the server handle?" However, without running any tests, I can't say that's definitely the problem... what I'd recommend is asking them to turn things back on temporarily so that we can take a look and see exactly what the problem is, so we can help you keep it from happening again. If you can get access to the server again, drop us a support request here: https://www.interactivetools.com/support/email_support.cgi If not... about all I can recommend is switching to a new host. Generally, you should be able to have at least 2000 listings without any trouble, and I've seen some sites go well over 4000. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. :) Donna

Hello Donna, I do have a support request in. I emailed Jake yesterday with the FTP details as the web host have let me back in but I have not yet received a reply. I haven't re-set the search.cgi script permissions because I don't want to be locked out again before you can run your tests but my customer is breathing down my neck big-time. In the meantime, I was wondering if there was something I could do to help reduce the server load. I have disabled database sorting but I don't know whether this will reorder everything on the site or what it does. I have a number of categories in the navigation bar which obviously use the script every time a visitor clicks on them. There are even more categories on the search form page, which is currently disabled. Should I create a robots text file to stop the search engines indexing the URL's created by the search script (not really what I wanted for obvious reasons but wondered whether their indexing was part of the problem)? I have a link to the listings/index page on each page for search engines to follow. I'm just not understanding why the script is such a problem. I am in fact strongly considering moving the site to a new host but my client wants guarantees that the same thing won't happen again. I can't seem to get hold of any hard data to be able to know that it'll be OK with a new host. Admittedly, the package that the site is currently on is a basic package but the hosting company just won't reply to my emails.

Hi Annie, If you've got a support request in, then we can take a look at the size of your database as well as run some test scripts, which can hopefully give you more details about why it's not running terribly well. Unfortunately (especially for your client!) there are never any guarantees. However, our software works just fine on the vast majority of servers -- and you can always test it on the new server before committing yourself 100%. Search engines definitely won't be the problem here. I can just about guarantee that it'll be a lack of resources available from your hosting provider... if not, a particularly large database file. (With less than 700 listings, probably not... but if you have a ton of data in each record, it's a possibility.) Either way, we'll be able to give you more details when we go through the support request and run some tests. :) Donna

Maybe I can share my experience here, I have over 1000 users and over 5000 listings. Before I used a share hosting and it sucks. Nowaday I use a dedicated server with 4GB of ram. Everything works fine and fast even I turn the database sort out on. So it is not the bandwidth issue, it's your server problem.
