need help with displaying images in gallery, with big image at top and small thumbnails underneath

hi all
i've tried to integrate the css galleria script (http://www.monc.se/galleria/demo/demo_01.htm) to allow me to change the way the images are displayed on _publish_listing.html - i want to display a big image at the top and lots of smaller thumbnails at the bottom. i have tried pulling them in with $thumbnail$ and using $desc$ for the 'title' field but no joy.
please help - as soon as possible would be appreciated.

I'm not 100% sure how that plugin works, but if you take a look at the following two tutorials that have a similar effect, you can see how those ones work:
