Template question??

What is the easiest way to modify the Realty Manager(2.25) to use .php templates? Is there a setting to allow it to look for _publish_listing.php instead of _publish_listing.html? Any help or suggestions on this topic would be appreciated.

No, there isn't, but it should be a pretty simple feature to add (allow user to specify file extensions). I can put it on the feature list for the next minor revision if you like. Another option, if you have an Apache server you can sometimes create an .htaccess file to tell the server than all the .html files in a specific folder should be parsed as PHP files. Let me know if you want more info on that. Dave Edis - Senior Developer interactivetools.com

Being able to change the extensions on templates would be a nice feature to have on future updates. Apache parsing .html as .php-- I have been recommended to do this before I have heard that once you do that your FrontPage extensions are almost useless. (i.e. Your FrontPage includes will no longer work.) Is this true??

I'm not really sure, I don't use FrontPage and I'm not sure how it's includes work. Probably the best way to test would be to create a test directory with a simple "Hello World" PHP script and try making .html files execute as .php files just in that directory. Then you could add a frontpage include and see if it still works. If you do give this a try, let us know either way. : ) Dave Edis - Senior Developer interactivetools.com

Here is an update on Frontpage and PHP. Frontpage includes are not parsed when the page is named with the extension .php or .php3. I'm sure that it is rm.cgi that is identifying what templates to look for. Is it possible to tell it to look for another one?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "what templates to look for"? Could you give me some more details or what you're thinking? Dave Edis - Senior Developer interactivetools.com

I'm sure somewhere in the Realty Manager program there is a place where it specifies what template to use. Such as for listing data use template "_publish_listings.html". It seems like all you would have to do is change .html to .php and modify the template accordingly. Make sense?

Ok, I understand. The file extension doesn't really matter for the templates because it's just being read as a data file by the program and not being parsed by the web server at all. So unfortunately changing the file extension won't help. What do these frontpage extensions look like that aren't working? I'm not very familiar with frontpage but maybe if we take a look we can come up with something. Dave Edis - Senior Developer interactivetools.com

The extensions matter to some extent. I thought by just changing _publish_listings.html to _publish_listings.php when the listings are published they would be published with a .php extension. When this was done it said it was unable to find _publish_listings.html. Frontpage includes are not even included. I think it is a known problem.

Maybe I am just confusing myself. What I need to accomplish is to have all listings published with a .php extension. Some of the things I want to do with the listings can be accomplished much easier (for me) in php than with perl. Unfortunately, something simple as changing the extension on the templates did not work. For some reason the Realty Manager requires the template names as is. Any more suggestions?

I hate to keep beating a dead horse but has anyone come up with a way to allow the Realty Manager to produce .php listing pages instead of .html? I remember seeing a site a while back that had modified it to produce .shtml but I am not sure how they accomplished it. Any suggestions would be appreciated...
