Image Optimisation Can't Post

Hi

Not an official interactive tools subject, but i brushed upon it in another post.

I always have problems with clients and images, they either cant understand the resolution/inch size thing, or they cant grasp the gif/jpeg/bmp issues and how to choose which format to use and how to optimise.

So i just thought i'd ask the community if they had any suggestions regarding super easy/automated scripts, apps or routines for clients to compress their files.

I tend to recommend http://www.xat.com image optimizer pro, im not connected in anyway but its about as easy to explain to clients as i've found.

Does anyone else have any suggestions for image handling?

Thanks

Re: [leeshields] Image Optimisation [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Lee,

I use Photoshop - it has a rather handy "save for web" function which dramatically reduces the size of the image. Unfortunately it costs quite a bit - and I'm sure there's similar functionality in some free software.

Just fyi, the next version of Realty and Auto Manager will have an automatic image thumbnailing option for those people with ImageMagick / GD extensions on their server.

Re: [leeshields] Image Optimisation [In reply to] Can't Post

By pure coincidence I needed to prepare a whole set of images for Article Manager today. Generally, the dimensions were way too large, so I knocked up a quick script to resize them. It can be downloaded from http://www.horne.nildram.co.uk/utilities/photosize.zip

To run it type:

photosize -width=<max_width> -height=<max_height> -source_dir=<source dir> dest_dir=<dest dir>

*width is the maximum width of the image if it is in landscape mode.
*height is the maximum height of the image if it is in portrait mode
*source_dir is the directory where the images to be resized reside. photosize will look for files of type jpg, gif and png in this directory.

*dest_dir is the directory where the resized images will be written

The images will be resized to meet the appropriate parameters defined above, and the proportions will be maintained. If the image is smaller than the maximum specified it is unchanged. Hope you find it useful.

Re: [dhorne] Image Optimisation [In reply to] Can't Post

My brain just melted!

ok, if you have a batch to do, photoshop, imageready or indeed fireworks or xat optimiser all have batch functions, which is handy if you want to resize and compress a whole pile of shots, but only if you know what you are doing in the first place!

But im just pondering the client side stuff

Ben, the thumbnail option sounds very very good, would be a nice bonus for a speedy download. I was actually thinking of suggesting my client do a small version for the preview and full size for the detail shots.

Keep it coming!

Thanks

Lee,

I have been using "Easy Thumbnails" from Fookes Software. It's a really easy program to use. It will optimize your images up or down to the size you set. You can optimize one image at a time, or a batch. The interface has an image preview and a preview for the optimized. Your clients shouldn't have a problem using this program. I use it often when I only want to size and optimize.

You can find the program at: http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/index.html?2.53

And, best of all it's FREE !

I hope this helps

TJ
