Can we not use any punctuation in a listing field?

I'm learning the hard way some of the problems with setting up listings. Namely using things like apostrophe's in descriptions(which causes the field not to show up at all) is there anything else I need to know about what I can and can't use in listings. My client is now going to need to learn html, the reason we picked this software was for her to not have to do this-I'm still waiting to here about "s in links. Is this all happening because we used html in one spot(field) we now have to use it everywhere?

You should be able to use almost anything in a listing field as long as its only used as text in the final HTML. If you are mixing code and text then you are going to cause some problems. I noticed your last post where you were trying to fix lots of problems. You might be better scraping the HTML and starting again with a fresh template, rather than continuously trying to modify and alter code. It also gives you chance to add, remove, or rethink all the things you needed to do better first time! (believe me i've done it a couple of times and the end result is usually much better) If you are going to add links in the listings or things like that, put just the link in there, no hrefs or anything, let the html templates deal with all that, same with images etc, just put in the filename, infact i dont even add .jpg, again i let the templates do as much as possible. Like I say rather than panicking, sit back and have a fresh look at the problems, and usually the answers are right there, everytime I've had a problem its been a silly little mistake in the html, even a space in the wrong place etc. You can also think of different ways to fix the problem, there may be a simpler way to achive the result you need. Good luck anyway Lee __ Lee Shields Apogee Technology John R Hornsby Adelante Properties Villassist Paul Withey Estate Agents

I wish it were that simple, this site requires a lot of extras that I cannot dump at this point. The problem is as soon as one thing gets fixed it goes flooey somewhere else.Things that were working perfectly go bad as soon as something else is fixed. How can you possibly put in a link without some kind of coding? I have to have a beginning and ending to a link or it all would just show up anyway (I tried-I know) I'm walking away for a day-and hopefully I'm not fired the next one-this really is taking up a huge amount of time. Hi Irishis, I'm really sorry to hear you're having such trouble. Realty Manager was designed for precisely this - to allow users to input information without having to know HTML, so I'm sure we can find a solution to your problem. Concerning having apostrophes in listings, lee is quite right, it shouldn't interfere with the html output - in fact, you should be able to put any characters you want. One question springs to mind: are you using the JavaScript code posted elsewhere in the forums to determine whether or not the field is empty (and if so, NOT draw anything to the page)? If so, this may well be the root of the problem. The apostrophes may be confusing the code and preventing your descriptions from being properly outputted. Post me back about this. Also, concerning your link problem, I suspect I may have to take a look at it directly. You mentioned you were going to fill in a support request - in this instance it might not be a bad idea. I'll take a look at your site and determine precisely what needs to be done. Again, sorry you're having such trouble, but we're here to help. Once I receive your email I'll get right on it. Yes I am using the script because not all listings have input so I have too, any way you can think of around this. If my client doesn't use any puntuation people aren't going to want to buy from her if she can't form proper sentences.

Hi Erin, I just emailed you - I'll take a little time this evening to come up with a workaround. The problem is the javascript. I'll email you (and post here, too) my solution :-) Ben interactivetools.com

How can you possibly put in a link without some kind of coding? I have to have a beginning and ending to a link or it all would just show up anyway (I tried-I know) the code goes in the template and you just add the web address. eg <a href="mailto:$lfield9$"><font face="ms sans serif" size=2>$lfield9$</font></a> this is an email link obviously but the principal is the same in this case the html is all coded, RM just adds the last little bit of detail. If you have some blank links, recode and link to a 'sorry but' type of page, rather than trying to use some bodged java, at least that way you know all users can see it, eg sorry no details available, please click to search again, or even add back buttons or a redirect. Like I said before there can be many ways to solve a problem dont get too fixated on a single solution, sometimes the simplest answers are the best.
