Authorization failure on ListingManager Can't Post

I have a client that complains that often the ListingManager will not let her add listings or upload pictures.

I came over and added a listing, added pictures to it and saved it, then deleted it. Worked okay for me. I let her go back to work and watched over her shoulder. She added with no trouble. She went back & tried to add a listing for a particular user and got You are not authorized to view this page when she told it to save. I took over and tried it myself, same error. Thought maybe the user files were messed up, so I went to Setup Options and tried to Repost all Homepages and got the 'You are not authorized . .. ' error. Closed the browser and went back in. Used the browser 'Favorites' to go to ListingManager and was returned, not to the login, but back to the SetupOptions screen. Used the Logout button and was returned to the their website. Used the Favorites again and was returned to the SetupOptions (btw, if I tried to publish anything when this page is up, I got the same error). Closed all programs including the browser, opened a new browser and logged into ListingManager. Went to SetUp Options and tried to Publish Homepages, got :

You are not authorized to view this page

I am at a loss to find what is wrong. Any ideas?

Update of error:

I updated IE from 6 to 7 and tried again and still got 'not authorized'. I tried in Firefox and got:

You don't have permission to access /cgi-bin/listman/exec/admin.cgi on this server.

Any ideas ?

Hi there,

I think we'd need to take a closer look at that -- would you be able to fill in a support request?

Ok, found out what the problem was : a firewall at the hosting service called 'modsecurity' was locking the /cgi-bin because the updating and publishing was setting it off. I don't know what was different this month than all the previous months, but here's what they said:
Hello,

Thank you for your patience.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. To make security program strong we have recently enabled the tool mod security. However, mis configured or overly strict rule sets, ModSecurity may cause your website to return various errors. If you find that mod_security is interfering too much with your web applications, you can disable it easily.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to reply through Support Console. We are available 24x7.

Sincerely,

Hi there,

I've definitely seen that before (it would be one of the things we'd test for) ... disabling that is probably your best bet.

The easiest way to do that is to create a file called .htaccess (note the period at the beginning) with the following in it:

SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off

then upload that file to your server, and that should fix it up. :)

If not, contact your hosting provider -- they may have disabled allowing you to use .htaccess files in that way and they'll let you know how you can disable mod_security it on your server.
