Notice: CMSB Upcoming Features and Development Plan Can't Post

Hello all,

We've had a lot of people asking for us to pre-announce upcoming features. Here's what we're working on for the next few versions:

Page Previews - A way to preview changes being made within the CMS before posting them live. Done - v2.07

Relative Upload Paths - Currently uploads are stored with their full filepaths and urls which can add an extra step when moving servers. We're going to update that to store relative paths in the database and re-generate the absolute paths in the viewers when they are displayed.

Shared Asset Library - A way to "share" uploads between records so you don't need to upload the same file over and over again when multiple records require it.

And we have the following plugins in development:

Comments Plugin - Works with website membership to allow logged in users to comment on any page, records, item, etc.

Ratings Plugin - Works with website membership to allow users to select a rating (0 - 5 stars) and display that rating on any type of page, record, or item.

Instant Website - A template set with 5 themes and a hierarchical menu structure all driven from a single viewer file. Great for creating websites fast or as an example for developers how to create pre-made templates that work instantly with CMSB. - Done!

Also, sometime we'll be doing maintenance releases between planned releases where we release bug fixes, minor changes, and features that were added through consulting or custom programming.

We don't have any release dates yet, but feel free to post any questions.

Thanks for all your feedback and support! :)

Dave ....

As usual, you guys seem to have your finger directly on the pulse of your customers! I have wished for every one of your upcoming features at some point in time and the "Relative Upload Paths" and "Shared Assets Library" are probably the most wished for items.

I can see the "Instant Websites" being a huge hit since it will provide real world examples to help jump start the learning process for those new to CMSB.

Kudos to you and the Itools team!

Hi Dave,

It would be interesting to improve ergonomics of the interface of administration of the sections.

1) the possibility of using fields (input)
datepicker, colorpicker ...
2) for long sections, the possibility of using a accordion function.
3) ...

Thanks ! :)

Re: [Dave] Notice: CMSB Upcoming Features and Development Plan [In reply to] Can't Post

This is solid set of future updates from my perspective. One other item I am always hoping for is the ability to have a "multi-record" within a "single-page" record. Example: in the current system if I have a management team page I have to create two separate editors for this page. One for the management team listings (name, title, bio, photo, etc) and then a second single page editor for the other elements that might appear on that page (introductory text). It would be great if I could do this all within one section editor. It would work almost like the image upload module.

an idea for a future feature...

The page you see after logging into the CMS always feels a little barren and something that would be great to be able to include there are some "shortcuts" to common actions:

Add a News Item
Add a Job Listing
Add an Event
Etc...

Hi folks,

Thanks for the great feedback! :D

@Djulia: Datepickers and colourpickers would be great; the way our code base is moving it will be much easier to add these features in the future. I'm curious: what do you mean by an "accordian function" for long sections?

@zip222: I've wanted a combo Single/Multi editor for a while now. You can almost do this with a Related Records field, but there's currently no way to get a Create button in there. Also, there is no search or pagination functionality.

Regarding shortcuts to common actions, I'm not sure CMS Builder will be able to guess which actions are common, but you can write a simple plugin to change the content of the home page. I've attached one to this post as an example — you can change the HTML in the plugin to whatever you'd like to modify the home page content.

Hi Maurice,

These are features you can expect to see in the next few versions. Version 2.06 is a maintenance release, but I've been working on Page Previews for a few days now. Stay tuned! :)

Re: [Dave] Notice: CMSB Upcoming Features and Development Plan [In reply to] Can't Post

I think two small changes to the code viewer would be cool

1. Have a checkbox that allows to designate a textfield or textbox HTML free. This way the code generator automatically inserts <?php echo htmlspecialchars ($record['name']) ?> type format. Now, we have to do it manually. This will save a few seconds and mouse clicks.

2. Be able to designate a textfield as a website. Then the code would generate the statement <?php if ($record['website']): ?><?php if (!preg_match("/^http:\/\//", $record['website'])) { $record['website'] = "http://" . $record['website']; } ?>

OR

Be able to designate a textfield as a website and it would require the http:// or designate it an email address and require the @ character. This could also be opened to almost any character if you could add a fourth option to allowed content such as, "Must Contain".

Thanks,
Kenny

Hi Chris,

> I'm curious: what do you mean by an "accordian function" for long sections?
1) Often I organize my sections in sub-sections with a Header Bar. Also, sometimes my sections can have ten sub-sections. It would be interesting to open or close the sub-sections according to the needs.

http://docs.jquery.com/UI/Accordion

2) It would be also interesting to be able to split in columns (2, 3…) the use of the checkbox.

This

[] checkbox 1
[] checkbox 2
[] checkbox 3
[] checkbox 4

would give this

[] checkbox 1 [] checkbox 2
[] checkbox 3 [] checkbox 4
---

Thanks for the feedback. :)

Re: [Dave] Notice: CMSB Upcoming Features and Development Plan [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Dave,

I'd like to be able to control the appearance of date fields in the list views. Right now a date shows up like: 2010-09-14 14:37:27. I'd love to be able to apply a standard PHP date format option to make it 2010-Sept-14 2:37PM or similar.

A small item perhaps but I don't think this is easily done ATM.

The other thing, I love the recent ability in Related Records "fields" to choose different List Actions than the default for the parent table. Would love to take this one step further and select the display fields for the embedded Related Record area differently from the displayed columns shown when the entire table is viewed.

J.

Re: [Djulia] Notice: CMSB Upcoming Features and Development Plan [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello,

Djulia, you read our minds! In fact, I just signed in to find a solution for this EXACT feature. No kidding. We have a client which is a rental home business and we need to include over 30 amenities (check boxes) which will add length to the admin page - makes the page look generic.

I may look into the forum for a solution, even if we had to go into the php that’s fine, but this feature will be a nice improvement!

We really like this application and we’ve been building clients’ websites with CMS Builder since version v1.34 Great work guys!

Thanks

How about drag and drop?

Instead of clicking up and down several time, it would be nice to have drag and drop on sections similar to other software.

This way the user could simply drag a section to where they wanted it to be.

Re: [Dave] Notice: CMSB Upcoming Features and Development Plan [In reply to] Can't Post

How about a more elegant way to handle categories (when using CMSb for blogging).

I don't want users going into edit mode to add items to a list so I currently create seperate, single field "Categories" Section Tables for each blog which is display as a list (checkboxes) for the user when creating a blog post. Problem is, if a user decides they want a new category as they're creating a blog post they have to save their work, open up the categories section, add/save the new category record, then go back and reload their blog post.

A multi value List Option that lets users edit/add records to it or edit/add records to a second section table (which is being loaded as a list) would make things more elegant for the users.

I'm sure I am not the first person to request a newsletter plug in. I currently use campaignmonitor which is brilliant but it would be a nice addition if I could incorporate newsletters directly into the CMS. It's just a bit clunky using two different systems

Any thoughts?

Hi Jeff,

It's a great idea, and on the list. We want to switch away from our old newsletter mailing system as well to something more integrated.

Re: [Dave] Notice: CMSB Upcoming Features and Development Plan [In reply to] Can't Post

Here are a few features that would be great.

Dependable Fields: For example - if field "has_dvd_palyer" is checked, then show this filed "dvd_palyer_color"

Dynamic Fields: (When a filed is set as dynamic the field will have a plus symbol near it, when clicked a additional filed of the same type would be added) For example - For example - say we have family section which has three fields father, mother and child when the child field is set as dynamic the user can simply click on the plus symbol to add additional children. this can be further enhanced by enable fields to be grouped allowing for the plus symbol to add multiple fields. For example - say we have a company section and a group of fields called contact which contains name email and phone, when the user would click on the plus symbol the system would add the fields in the group.

Hi Guys.

Something that has dropped off my radar is the ability to copy / duplicate records. A lot of the time a multi record section comprises of records that are pretty much the same... such as a real estate site. It would be great to have a "duplicate" button...

I've uploaded a plugin we made a while ago that does pretty much that. Let me know if it works for you:
