Template Layout and Links Can't Post

Greetings,

I have seached the forum and not found answers to my questions.

So, three questions from a newbie.

1) I have a header graphic that is taller than the default graphic. Is there a way to adjust (lower) the rest of the page(s) so my header graphic will have room at the top?

2) I assume it's possible to have links included in my header graphic that would return someone to the other pages of the site that are not generated within AM2. How can this be accomplished? Step by step if possible.

3) What is the best way to set up the links on the pages of a site that are non-AM2 generated to reach the main AM2 pages of each category? Again, step by step if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [TnMountainMan] Template Layout and Links [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

Thanks for posting!

I'll go over each of your questions for you one at a time:

1. Yes, this shouldn't be a problem at all. You'll find that Article Manager has a style by default that will control the header and you can find this in the /artman/style/stylesheet.css file. You'll want to modify the "height" value for this style:

#header {
width: 820px;
position: relative;
height: 106px;
background: #CCC url(images/header.jpg) no-repeat center top;
padding: 0;
font-size: 14px;
color: #FFF;
}

This should then allow you to put a larger image in the header.

2. Yes, you'd just want to modify the template that is used for the header itself (/templates/singlePages/siteHeader.html) and tweak this to suit your needs. If you can provide me with some details as to how this looks right now and how you'd like this to be set up I'd be happy to look into that for you. Beyond that, you should be able to just use a regular link tag (<a href="http://www.yoursite.com/">Link Text</a>) to link to an external page or site.

3. For these non-Article Manager pages, were you hoping to just link directly to the category index pages or were you actually hoping to have the category menu that is displayed on Article Manager's pages also show up on the non-Article Manager pages? If you can provide me any other details about this, I should be able to have a look at this for you.

I look forward to hearing from you! Smile

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the response! I appreciate it. I will get into all of this very soon, but right now for some reason, I cannot login to AM2. I have double and triple checked my two different login usernames and pw's. This just started late last night. It appears to login, but the login screen is still there and will not let me go anywhere.

What are your or anyone's thoughts on this?

Thanks.

For my third question at the top: I basically just want to link to the AM2 pages from the non-AM pages but with password protection in between.

Example: www.mysite.com/protected/customersupport This type of link to the main page of several independant locations within AM.

Thanks

Hi TnMountainMan,

I'm not quite sure I understand the process of adding in the password-protection layer here - could you elaborate on how that works a bit more? Is there a problem with linking to the Article Manager category index or article pages directly?

With some more details we should be able to work something out for you. Smile

Re: [TnMountainMan] Template Layout and Links [In reply to] Can't Post

*Update: Error messages situation resolved.

Now back to the other situation: My third question. I'm using the standard way of password protecting through cpanel. I have setup password protection on a folder called "protected". I need "all" portions of AM2 to be password protected through this setup.

Example: my non-generated site page www.mysite.com/customer_support will have a link on it to click. When this link is clicked, it will trigger the small "MS-windows" popup box to enter your username and password to gain access to the AM2 pages or I could make the link itself on my non-AM2 generated page to www.mysite.com/customer_support trigger the popup box to login to see the AM2 generated pages instead of having the link on an actual page named: www.mysite.com/customer_support

Thanks in advance.

Hi TnMountainMan,

From what you've written there, I think the only thing you'd need to do within Article Manager is set it up to publish files in the "protected" directory. You can set you publish directory location and URL under Admin -> Server Settings. All of the methods you mentioned for triggering the password authentication should be compatible with this setup.

Let us know if you need any further information on this!

Re: [Jake] Template Layout and Links [In reply to] Can't Post

I've attempted to set this up with password protection, but something has gone wrong.

I've changed and published the: publish directory location and URL and re-uploaded the artman2 and cgi-bin folders into the password protected folder: "protected" which is inside my public_html folder.

If I bring up this address: http://softlightonline.com/protected/artman2/publish/index.shtml all appears fine, but if I refresh it, all graphics and formatting of the page are gone.

I can't even login to the admin portion of AM2 now.

What have I done wrong?

Re: [TnMountainMan] Template Layout and Links [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

Thanks for the post!

If you'd like to prevent people from being able to access the published articles, you won't necessarily need to move the entire script into the /protected/ folder. As Jake mentioned you'll really just need to set up Article Manager to publish it's files to that protected folder.

That said, if you've already moved everything there shouldn't be anything in the password protection that will prevent you from viewing Article Manager's admin program. I'd guess that this issue is more likely related to the fact that the files have been moved around on the server (specifically the CGI scripts) as on certain servers this can cause CGI scripts to stop working. In this case it's possible that either the permissions will need to be reset or a fresh copy of those CGI scripts will need to be re-uploaded.

From my end here it's a bit tough to see the specific issue or error message but if you can email me (https://www.interactivetools.com/support/email_support.cgi) with the username and password for this section, as well as the FTP details, I'll have a look at your server for you.

I hope this helps! Smile

I've now managed to fix things to now be able to login to the admin section of AM2, but even though the text editor is there, it is messed up. Garbled graphics where the editor tools should be.

I also need to know which files/folders need to be uploaded into my password protected folder to make them password protected without causing the admin section to not function. I'm just using the standard pw protection through the cpanel.

Thanks!

Re: [TnMountainMan] Template Layout and Links [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

Thanks for posting!

I've had a look at this for you and it looks like the issue here was just related to the images that are used for the icons in the WYSIWYG editor. It seems that they hadn't been fully uploaded to the server and after re-uploading the /wysiwyg/scripts/icons/ folder, this seems to be taken care of.

To have Article Manager's content password protected all you'll need to do is ensure that the "Publish Directory" and "Publish URL" both point to your /protected/ folder (or a subdirectory within it).

I hope this helps! Smile

Thanks Mike!

So just to clarify, nothing (files or folders) actually needs to be uploaded inside the protected folder. I just need to change the "path" in the two places you mentioned?

*Update: It appears that some files/folders need to be uploaded into my /protected/ folder for the password protection to work. I have attempted to change the path of the "Publish Directory" and the "Publish Folder URL", but this does not seem to allow the password protection to work.

Could you instruct me precisely on what files/folders have to be inside the protected folder if this is indeed what I need to do?

Thanks,

Hi TnMountainMan,

When you changed the Publish URL and Publish Directory settings, did you re-publish your files? This would be required to actually store articles in this protected directory. To do this, go to Admin -> Publishing and click the "Publish All" button after adjusting those publish settings.

I hope that helps!

I apoligize. I neglected to mention this. Yes, I did do this.

Is this the correct path I should be using?

Default Publish URL: http://softlightonline.com/protected/artman2/publish/

Default Publish Directory: /home/softligh/www/protected/artman2/publish/

Keep in mind, none of the AM2 files/folders are uploaded in the /protected/ folder.

Thanks.

Re: [TnMountainMan] Template Layout and Links [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

Thanks for the email!

If you haven't uploaded any of Article Manager's files into the /protected/ folder, and if the only thing you'd like people to see when they go to this folder is Article Manager's content then you could actually use these for the URL and path:

http://softlightonline.com/protected/
/home/softligh/www/protected/

This way when people are looking at an article the URL will look like this:

http://softlightonline.com/protected/category_name/article_name.shtml

The /artman2/publish/ isn't required and considering you'd like the articles to be published into the /protected/ folder there's no need for the extra few levels of folders (/artman2/publish/)

I hope this helps! Smile

Re: [MikeB] Template Layout and Links [In reply to] Can't Post

I've followed your suggestion and attempted it 3 times and the new file path stays as intended when you "save" them, but when you "publish all" it reverts back to having the /artman2/publish/ back in the file path and nothing appears to be password protected.

What in the world is wrong here. I would think this would be a fairly simple process as you and others have suggested, but It's not turning out to be that simple.

Help!

Thanks.

Re: [TnMountainMan] Template Layout and Links [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi TnMountainMan,

Is any Article Manager content showing up within the protected directory at all?

One thing you might want to check is that you don't have a custom publish directory set up in your publishing rules, which overrides the default setting in the Admin area. To check this, go to Admin -> Publishing and click the "modify" link for each of your publishing rules. You'll want to make sure that they're set up to use the default publish directory setting.

Let us know how this works out - I'm sure we can get this wrapped up for you soon. Smile

Thanks for the response Jake.

I've checked the "custom publish directory set up in the publishing rules" and everyone of them is set to default.

None of the Article Manager content is showing up within the protected directory.

Here is what I'm seeing:

Hi,

Thanks for these details!

From what you've mentioned here, when you click "Publish All" there shouldn't be any settings that are automatically changed or reverted. I'd really like to have a look at this myself so if you could reply to the last email we'd sent you, I'll log into Article Manager and have a look at this for you.

I look forward to hearing from you! Smile
