Summary image problem

Hello, I have a Summary image problem
I created an upload field that contains the summary image. (The image is cropped to correct size before uploading)
I created a handful of articles with a test image to make sure it all worked then went back to add the correct summary image and the new image does not appear. It shows correctly in the create/edit article admin screen but not on the published page.
Newly created articles DO show the summary image correctly. But if I go back and change it the photo no longer appears.

Every one of those stories has a summary image loaded but only newly created stories are displaying them.
Any ideas?

Yes, I tried editing each article, then publishing the articles again then a 'publish all' but nothing worked.
It's just very odd that it'll hold the photos for new articles but loses them if they are updated later.
