Server load - search.cgi Can't Post

I have a busy site and use search.cgi for related articles etc creating considerable load on the server.
My server provider asks the following question -

"I was just curious if we could run it under mod_perl or something, as it might help? Does the developer support this?

The CPU power on the new box is 25-50% more but the script is eating up the current box, will do the same to the new one.."

Be glad for an answer

Re: [typspanish] Server load - search.cgi [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there.

Thanks for posting. The search.cgi script can be quite server intensive, especially when doing the related articles.

If you aren't already, I definitely recommend switching your database to MySQL. That will help quite a bit. If you are already using MySQL, you can try turning on mod_perl but we don't actually officially support that. The effects are slightly different on every server so it might be something that helps on your site.

Let me know where you get to with this. Thanks!

Re: [ross] Server load - search.cgi [In reply to] Can't Post

We use MySQL but have over 21,000 articles - In the end we have placed a link to open the related articles in an ajax window instead of loading them with every page - It has made a huge difference on the server.

I think AM needs a new update to the search.cgi to run related articles on large sites.

Re: [typspanish] Server load - search.cgi [In reply to] Can't Post

Has anyone managed to speed up the showing of related articles? It is such a handy item for both visitors and seo purposes but a huge drain on server resources. Other similar content manager scripts don't seem to suffer from a slowdown so there must be some way around it - hopefully...
