Packaging groups of articles Can't Post

I think this may have been asked before but I can't seem to find it.

I have a client that publishes a quarterly scientific journal and they want to publish the print articles online but keep the 'journal' structure. So they want the latest issue articles only
(ie with the articles from a previous quarter 'archived')

I thought about creating a hidden field containing the relevant published date (eg 2007q1, 2007q2, etc) and running a search query on the homepage but it seems a bit of a dirty-hack way of doing it. Also someone will have to go in and edit the template each quarter to search for the latest issue and the whole idea of using AM2 on this site is that no-one has to do any coding after the initial setup.

Can you suggest anything more sensible?

Hi Simon.

Thanks for posting!

Well, I can see what you are trying to setup here and to be honest, it will still end up being a little bit of work each month, but it can all be done in the interface so no mucking about in the templates.

Basically, what you would do is create a new "archive" category and just assign all your current categories to a sub category in that one. Sub categories would be like January, February, March, etc. This will move everything into the archive under the appropriate month. From there, you would just create new copies of your main categories again and start posting articles to them as you normally do.

Does that sound like it would work? Let me know what you think Smile.

Re: [ross] Packaging groups of articles [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello Ross, thanks for the answer.

Just to make sure I get this right.

1. I create an category called ARCHIVE containing sub categories for each archived issue (Jan Feb Mar etc)

2. I create a new issue category with all the relevant sub-categories to contain the latest issue of the publication

3. When the next issue is due I move the current issue category into the archive then create a new issue category.

Is that what you mean?

Is there a way to duplicate a category and all of it's subs rather than manually re-create them each issue?

Many thanks

Simon

Hi

sorry I've just thought of two other bear-traps with this one.

1. The client wants to keep all previous material visible so if a reader want's to see the list of all articles from a particular category from all issues (both current and archived) how would that be achieved?

I'm guessing we'd have to run a search query to display them? I'm guessing we could use an adaptation of the 'Relevant articles' tutorial to pick out a category name?

2. The client has just thrown this one at me. . .

They would like the latest issue to be contained within a subscriber only section until the following issue is published. (ie the freely available version will be one issue behind on the site, the new issue will be in a password protected area)

Will this mess up the procedure we discussed earlier with moving categories around? Or will I just carry out the same process?

Sorry for the extra hassle.

Many thanks

Simon

Hi Simon

Thanks for the updates!

You are on the right track about how this would all happen in terms of how the categories would be managed.

When it comes to having a list of all the articles from one category regardless of whether they are archived or current, you could easily create a link that ran a search for all the articles in a specific set of categories. Basically it would be like, click here to see the articles from category 1, 5 and 7. You just need to keep track of which categories that link needs to pull articles from.

Now, in terms of copying a set of categories, that isn't something Article Manager is setup for just yet so you would need to create them again each month.

How does that sound? Let me know what you think Smile.
