List of Articles in Admin

When viewing the list of Articles within the Admin, the default view shows all of the articles. You can narrow the list down by using Advanced Search to only show articles from a particular category. I am using AM for a newspaper and there are certain categories that I don't want showing up in the default view of the list of articles. For example, I create each Obituary and Wedding entry as individual articles and don't want them all to show up in the default viewing of all articles. So, I need the default view of articles to not show articles from the Obituaries or Weddings categories. Then, I would like to add an "Obituaries" link and a "Weddings" link above the list of articles which would use the search function to only show articles under those categories. I'm sure that this can be done fairly easy using the search function. Is it as easy as I'm thinking? If so, could someone give me some direction as to how to do it? Thanks.

Hi there. Thanks for posting! There isn't really a way to filter the main list of articles so that it only shows certain categories. That part of it is coded right into the program. What you could do though is create yourself a couple different login accounts and assign each one to specific categories. So if you logged into the "obit/wedding" account, only the articles in your obituaries and weddings categories would show up. And then if you log in with the "articles" account, everything from all the other categories would show up. Does that sound like it would work? Let me know what you think and if you wanted me to go into more detail on how to get this going . ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

But isn't using the Advanced Search a way of filtering the articles so that it only shows articles from a particular category? What I was thinking was to somehow add links (or submit buttons) that when clicked would use the Search function to show a list of articles that was defined by that link (or button). Excuse my ignorance when it comes to working with Form elements such as the Search function. I'm probably just thinking it's something easy when it's really not. I understand and and could probably get your suggestion to work. But I really wouldn't want to have to login/logout everytime just to see a different list of articles. For the time that would take, it would be just as easy to go to the Advanced Search menu and search for all the Obits articles or all the Weddings articles.

Hi, Thanks for the follow-up! In this situation Ross's suggestion above would be your best option, editing the Article Manager admin interface is a tricky process that is a little hard to support. The other option would be to use the Advanced search feature to filter out articles like you had mentioned in your last post. :) Does this answer your questions? If you have any other questions please feel free to ask! Cheers, Chet Woodside - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Yes. Sorry if I'm asking too much. I realize that your support only covers so much as far as customization requests. In the Admin "article.html" page, is the following code for the Search button: <input type="submit" name="action=$_menuName:htmlEncoded$Search" value="Search" class="inputButton" /> I was just thinking that there may be some way to define another Search button that could be named "Obits" or "Weddings" that would only search for articles within those categories, even if the new Search buttons had to be hard coded. I'll play around with it a bit, but please let me know if I'm trying to do something that's not possible, as in having two Search buttons on the same page.

Hi there. The advanced search inside your admin interface is a completely separate thing from the search engine that your visitors use through search.cgi. What you are trying to setup here isn't really something I think is going to work the way you had expected but it isn't something I have tried. I say, give it a shot and let me know how you make out. Of course, make sure to keep some backups of your interface templates handy, just incase . ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com
