Is more really better – or - Divide and conquer?

Is it faster to utilize additional publishing rules – or more templateIF’s to accomplish the very same task? Here is the situation: At the moment I have 41 categories, and 6500 articles. I have just added 40 templateIF’s (SSI’s) to the article page publishing rule – and it took, 1 ˝ hours to update the 6500 articles. Problem is that I have another 80 templateIF’s to add to the article page publishing rule for a total of 120 templateIF’s - and it’s making me wonder if I’m doing the right thing. I can divide the categories into three logical working groups of 17, 19 and 3 categories (two categories have no articles) – each of which would then only have a corresponding number of templateIF’s x 3 (51, 57, 9 templateIF’s) -OR- Should I do it the 1.41 way, and simple have one publishing rule per category – with no templateIF’s at all? Logic says divide and conquer - but I wonder? - Mike

I'd do it which ever way makes the most sense for managing your templates and publish rules. It shouldn't make a big difference time-wise whether it's 1 publish rule or 3. And I'm not sure how much time the templateIfs add - I don't think it's much. How long did it take to publish all before? With 6500 articles 1.5 hours is about 0.8 seconds per article - not too long. And once they're published. You're done, you don't need to ever publish them again and they'll be served up lightning fast by your server since they're html files. Dave; You're right of course - I guess it was the amount of time it took to update the files that threw me for a loop - but then again, I wanted to make sure that I wasn't going overboard with too many templateIF's. If there is such a thing of course ;-) Thanks - Mike
