Different Templates for Categories Can't Post

Hi

I've just bitten the bullet and got around to installing version 2 (having used 1 for several clients very successfully) ... one major thing I need to get my head round is doing different templates for different categories - version 1 was great with the ability to select each template page when setting up the category - but I can't immediately get to grips with how to do it in 2... and have limited time (not least of which is this time of year!)

Could you give me a quick pointer as to how best to approach this ... the templates will need to be significantly different...

Thanks (in advance) hopefully

Cheers

Chris

I do not know if it is the best way or the right way, but the way I am doing it is via a publishing rule.

Basically, you create a copy of the Category Indexes publishing rule. Then you are able to select a new template. Then you can select the categories you want that template assigned to.

Depending upon the complexity of the differences - Another way to do is is with a template if statement. I have found however, that if you have to many template if statements, publishing time increases dramatically.

On my Las Vegas site - a work in progress - I'm actually using both a different publishing rule to separate a visitors section from my local news - and then within each of those I am utilize template if statements to change the header graphics, within the various categories.

I typically create three or four different category designs for sites that I develop. In this case, it makes sense to use a variety of templates and publishing rules, it also makes it much easier for the client to change the behaviour of one of the categories as all they have to do is update the publishing rule (which I walk them through.)

Thanks guys ... after my initial panic (!) I settled down a bit and have gone down the publishing rules route which is working fine... I did for a bit think I might end up with a horribly complex templateif solution (hence the panic) ... but everythings coming together now...

Have a good new year when it comes!

Hi Chris!

Yep, as everyone else mentioned, the two ways are with template if's and new publish rules. Templateif's are great if each category just has a couple of minor changes. Otherwise, new publish rules are definitely the way to go. :)
