We needed to change the naming convention in a drop-down list. We made that change in:
Admin |Database Editor | Edit Table: artman_article
However, it looks like this change does not effect
existing data. Is that correct?
And if we needed to change existing data,
we would need to perform a SQL query I assume?

That is correct. Other than going to into every article and making sure the change is there and clicking save, a manual SQL replace would be the way to go. Just back up first!!
