Can I Do This With AM2? Can't Post

Hi,
Please could you advise if the following is possible with AM2?.

I normally use Dreamweaver to create my sites and I have a template setup that I intend to use on a new design. My left hand menu system will be a server side include and there will be several tournament tables that I usually create as tables in MS Excel but can import the table as an 'gif' rather than html if necessary. Finally I use the normal menu system of folder names that assist a reader to identify the topic displayed.

My quick questions are -

Can I add the relevant code from AM2 into my DW template?
Do I need to use a variety of AM2 templates?
Can I use my own menu ssi and discard the AM2 created 'categories'?
Can I add new articles to specific folders in my site or are all articles published to the same folder?

Thank you for any advice,
Mickey

Hi Mickey.

Thanks for posting!

I am not actually sure if I have a visual in my head on what you are aiming for here so I'll just stick to going of your specific questions for now and we'll go from there Smile.

1. This actually happens in the other direction. You would add the specific parts of your templates to Article Manager's templates as there are things that happen on an Article Manager template that only Article Manager itself will understand. Things like placeholders and templatecells aren't going to work unless they are on an Article Manager template and well, that's how all the data gets put onto your pages. Without placeholders and templatecells, you've basically got a shell of a page so they are going to be quite important Smile.

2. Article Manager is very scalable so you'll be able to use the exact number of templates that you need so you can create new ones as needed or remove them. Now, it's actually what you are trying to setup that will eventually determine the number of templates you need so once I get a better idea of what you are trying to setup, I'll be able to see what options you have.

3. Certainly. You can add and remove anything you like to the templates.

4. You'll have complete control over where things publish on your server so you can have as many different folders going as you like.

How does that all sound? If you could let me know what think here and perhaps go into some more detail on how you wanted to set things up, I'll be able to work with you to get it all going.

I look forward to hearing from you Smile.

Re: [ross] Can I Do This With AM2? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Ross.
Thanks for the response. I'll rethink my plans. I intended to copy AM code across to my own template, having read your comments it appears better to copy my template code across to the AM templates. I'll have another look at it over the next few days and get back to you if need be.
Merry Christmas to everybody at Interactive Tools.

Best Wishes,
Mickey

Mickey

As Ross has pointed out, it is far easier to edit the template files with dreamwever than to try and include the AM tags in a dreamweaver template.

I have done it both ways, due to client requirements (interference Wink) and editing the AM pages is a lot easier and less prone to head scratching errors. Cool

Hope this helps.

Hi,
Just to jump in - I set my AM site up by doing exactly what you want to do.

I had a template already setup in dreamweaver then copied the appropriate code from the AM templates into my own. There is basically three templates that needed to fit into my design - the main page, the article page and the category page, each time I just used my own template and copied the code over. ** Keep a copy of the original templates so that you always have the proper code should something go wrong**

I also use the links on my menu to point to folders, so my 'History' page goes to mysite.com/history and each article is in that folder.

Finally I use normal asp includes for my header and navigation links.
