I want to archive some old articles but haven't used the tool in Article Manager before. What are the risks? Has anyone experienced problems with it?

Hi hollyr, Thanks for posting! I'd recommend checking out the documentation on this feature of Article Manager here: http://www.interactivetools.com/docs/articlemanager/admin/index.html Just click the "Archive Manager" link on the left. There aren't really any risks to its use - the documentation page should give you a better idea of what this tool is all about. ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Jake Swanson - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

I already did that but just wanted to know if there were ever issues with it and if so, what kinds? It seems easy enough, but what are the risk? Thanks!

Hi hollyr, There aren't really any risks with this - if you want to be safe though, you can backup the contents of Article Manager's "data" directory so that if something happens or a change is made that you don't like you can revert to your previous setup. ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Jake Swanson - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Thank you. Another question....I have a test version I use rarely and am getting this error: D:/Inetpub/wwwroot/cgi-bin/artman_1_41/data/filelock.lock: Permission denied I have administrator rights on the box. It used to work. Do you have any hints for me? I thought I might test it on that box first.

I archived 2 years worth of articles last night, but I need to know the following: 1) Quite a few files were created when I did it and some are large. Can they be stored on another server? Is Article Manager compressing the articles? It's hard to tell. 2) If we store the archives elsewhere, can users still browse to articles using view.cgi (which works great) if we change http://intranet.bok.com/artman/exec/view.cgi in the path in "Server" to another URL? 3) What files do I move? I ended up with the following files during my archive: category.dat setup.dat.cgi archive1.dat article.dat.tmp2096 (10mg) archive2.dat archive.dat Two new files were created today probably when the users published new articles: session.dat.cgi article.dat (Is this a new file created for the Current Articles once the 2 years worth of articles were archived? It's 14 MG) Thanks for your input.

Hi Holly, Basically, all Archiving does is creates an entirely new file for the articles -- almost exactly the same as the regular article.dat, but in a separate file so that the main article.dat is smaller. To be able to view them with the view.cgi, they do need to be in your /data/ directory. To make a backup of your articles, simply grab the /data/ directory. Any file that ends in .tmpXXX can be deleted after 24 hours. The rest, you need to keep as those are your articles, categories, etc. Generally, only the article & archive files will be large, and that depends on how many (and how large) the articles inside are. Just so you know, we don't actually support Article Manager 1 anymore, since the newer Article Manager 2 has been available for a year and a half. If you're having concerns about database size & speed, you may want to upgrade to Article Manager 2, as this allows you to use a MySQL database -- recommended for larger sites (which it sounds like yours is -- if you've got 10mb database files, that's large.) I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. :) Donna

Thanks for your help. If you would be so kind, could you answer one more small question even if you no long support version 1? We were going to upgrade once, but the developer we had working on it at the time wanted to re-write the web pages in *.net. Then he left before we got it deployed. We don't have time to try again right now. So, my question. Is there a limit to how many Archives can be displayed in the GUI? I have 11 and it only displays 10. The one I'm missing shows up in the Existing Archive drop down, but not in the list at the bottom of the screen which tells you how many articles are in each archive and gives you the option to "modify" or "erase". I tried creating another one and moving my 11th into a 12th, but neither showed up. So, I'm curious. If you have time and opportunity, I'd love to know.

Hi Holly, Nope, you can have as many archives as you need. I'm not sure why only 10 would be showing up on your installation. Is this in the back end (ie, in the Setup Options) that it's not displaying? Donna

Yes, it should show up under Setup Options | Archives at the bottom of the page. I know the archive exists. It just doesn't show where I can click on the number of article stored and see the list of articles in the archive. Like this: ID Archive Name Articles Stored Action 10 2006 Qtr3 460 articles modify erase 11 2006 Qtr4 doesn't show up Thank you for your time.

Hi Holly, Nope, they should definitely show up there. I think your best bet right now is filling in a support request, and we can take a look and see what's going on there. :) https://www.interactivetools.com/support/email_support.cgi Donna
