AM2 - omit date in selected categories Can't Post

I was wondering if anyone knew how to omit the date in selected categories yet retain it in other categories? Is it possible to pick and chose which category include a date and those which do not? Naturally, some news is breaking news (where the date adds value) and other news is just general in scope with the date being irrelevant and in somes cases TMI (too much info...).

While by category would be best, if it can't be achieved this way, can it be done on a case by case (headline & article) basis?

I could not find anything on this subject in the forum posts. Thanks for your help, jpea1 Crazy

Hi there.

Thanks for posting!

What I am thinking would work here is if you created a new drop down field for your categories. It would be called "Show Date" and would have yes or no as options.

With that field you would just select yes for the appropriate categories and then use some templates ifs on your template to only show the date for categories that you selected yes on.

Does that sound like it would work for you? Let me know and I'll show you how to get that going.

I look forward to hearing from you Smile.

Yes it sounds like what I'm looking to achieve Ross. If you could please lay it out it for me and all other AM2 users it would be great!

I would think it would be a decent feature to be included for future upgrades too - it gives general or standard content more "shelf life" while preserving the ability to include a date where it makes most sense to the user. My sense is it also would get users that have been requesting ways to produce "static pages" even closer, at least in appearance.

Hey this sound great Ross - I'm looking forward to implementing what you come up with! Cool

Hi.

The first step here is going to be creating that new category field so log into Article Manager and head over to the admin section.

From there, you'll click on the Database Editor and then click to modify the category table.

At the bottom of this page click on the "Add Field" button and fill out the following fields:

Field Label: Display Date
Field Name: displayDate
Field Type: list

Leave everything else as is and head down to List items. In the two text boxes there, enter yes for both (the second box should auto fill) and click the Add Item button. Two more boxes will appear and this time you'll enter no for both (again, the second one should auto fill). Click Add and then scroll all the way down to save your new field.

Now, when you go to your Category page and modify a category, that new field you just created will appear at the bottom so go through all your categories and select yes or no for them depending on whether you want the date to appear or not.

That's it for the admin side of things. The next step will be to open up your /articleLists/categoryIndex.html template and add a template if. Here's what that will look like:

Code
<!-- templateIf : $category.displayDate$ eq "yes" -->
<span class="global_updated">$_lastUpdated$</span>
<!-- /templateIf -->

You just need to stick that where you want the date to appear and you're done with the template. There are several different dates you can have appear there so you can play around with that part a bit.

Now that your template is updated, log back into Article Manager and got to Admin -> Publishing. From there you'll republish your category index rule and that's it.

Does that all make sense? Give it a shot and let me know how you make out Smile.

Re: [ross] AM2 - omit date in selected categories [In reply to] Can't Post

Once again, nice work Ross. It worked perfectly! It was just a matter of literally swapping out the $article.date$ placeholder with code as provided and messing with the - that remained even when the date was omitted. (I opted to omit the - and left two spaces.)

I'm sure you saw this one coming, but as a follow-up can the date which appears in the corresponding article (c/o the article page template?) be selectively omitted as well? If so, what is the procedure?

Thanks Ross - jpea1

Hi there.

Glad that worked for you Smile.

If you just take that same block of templateif code and stick it on your article template where the date needs to appear and that should be it.

Give it a shot and let me know Smile.
