Tutorial: Creating Multiple Page Articles automatically based on the number of paragraphs per page
|
Can't Post
|
|
Two different methods to do this. For this tutorial, I will show the steps for Method one. Method one: the article is split up over multiple pages based on the number of paragraphs per page. For example, page one shows paragraphs 1-4, page two show paragraph 5-9 and so on. This is done using the limitParagraphs placeholder modifier: $article.content:limitParagraphs(1-4)$ Method two: the article is split up over multiple pages by using multiple WYSIWYG editors in the article editor. Each WYSIWYG editor would publish content to a separate page. Method one: Mutiple Article pages using the limitParagraphs placeholder modifier 1. Upload the extra article templates (see attached zip file) into your /cgi-bin/artman2/templates/articlePages directory. 2. Create Publishing Rules for article pages 2, 3 and so on. Admin > Publishing - click Create button Rule Name: Article Page 2 Rule Description: The article second page Rule Type: a page for each article Template: articlePages/articlePage2.html Placeholder Set Name: published.articlePage2 Status: Active Published Files: <catFile>/<artFile>_2.<ext> Repeat this to make another publish rule for Article Page 3 (replacing 2 with 3 in the above steps). In Admin > Publishing, publish each of the articlePages rules. Now each of the article pages will have a page navigation like this "Page: 1 2 3 " appear for articles with more than 4 paragraphs.
The number paragraphs per page and pages generated is completely customizable. In included templates (in the attached zip), I also inlcuded a templateIf so that is the author field is left blank, the "By" won't be published. Give this tutorial a try a let me know if you have questions. :) Cheers Damon Edis interactivetools.com

Hi. Is there a solution where we can use "page break" in the default wysiwyg editor window. Splitting based on paragraphs does fit my kind of articles. I also want to have a page name for every page. Any Tutorial's on this Damon?

Hi, Thanks for the post! At this time we don't have a page break script that would allow you to add a page break inside the wysiwyg editor. However If you would like to provide us with a few more details on how you would like this to work on your website we may be able to come up with a solution that will work for you. :) I look forward to hearing back from you and if you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask! is it possible to make it depend on the number of characters? like 1000 for each page like the last version of this tutorial? splitting by paragraphs is kind of tricky with me, I have articles with many one sentence paragraphs

Hi, I don't see a way that you could limit the number of characters per page. Is using multiple WYSIWYG editors on a page an option for you? For example, on the create/edit article page you could have three WYSIWYG editors labeled: Content - Page 1 Content - Page 2 Content - Page 3 Cheers Damon Edis interactivetools.com

Hi Chet and the rest of the Interactivetools hacker's ;) For my article site (and I think others also needs it) I need a page break function. What I like is to have a button in the wysiwyg editor or somewhere else that give the option to insert a page break/ new page. Even better if I had a option to enter a page name like this (see attachment). It's from joomla 1.5. whit the option to have page break where ever I like, we can spit pages after where it's natural to have a break.

I would like to see this function as well. I have several articles that are quite large. Being able to insert a page break that would break the articles up into several pages would be great. I believe there was an unsupported script for AM 1 that would do this, if I am not mistaken.

A page-break option would be just what I can use on my website. The pages get quite long sometimes but I would like to be able to control where the page splits. *************** Marti Clayton That's Country

I would prefer the "page break option" but, for now, using the 3 WYSIWYG editors would probably solve my problem when I have long pages with a photo gallery and award winners etc. The first option "splitting paragraphs up" would make a mess of these articles. I would really appreciate that tutorial as I have no idea where to start. *************** Marti Clayton That's Country

I'm a site owner that is definitely interested in Article Manager but the feature that is holding back our purchase of it is the lack of a functioning pagebreak. In all of the 'free' CMS's like php-nuke, post-nuke, and others we've tried (Joomla being another one), the pagebreak feature is in by default and it is an extremely important feature that content sites like ours needs. We simply can't allow a 10,000 word article with multiple pictures to run-on in a single page. We cannot split up the article into multiple articles. I don't think that the tutorials offered above are a good answer to the needs of content site owners. I imagine that the methods work if implemented properly, but what it means is you are leaving it up to us, the purchasers, to modify the software when the developers should have included this feature by default. At the same time, there is no guarantee that these two methods work (for everyone), nor is there a guarantee that the published articles will display properly, link properly, etc, since it is not an integrated feature. I do take Damon's word at face value as I'm sure he's tested it himself thoroughly before posting it, but you can sense our hesitation for the sole fact that it is not a feature that is built into the software. Especially when free software like those I previously mentioned have the pagebreak function built into them (and work quite well as the script creates all of the necessary links and keeps the pages within the article properly). We are testing the demo software right now, adding as many articles as we can just to make sure the software does what we want, in all browsers and OS's, as well as getting the staff trained on your particular piece of software. I'm ready to spend the money as we definitely like it, but this is the one feature that is sorely lacking for us...we MUST have the pagebreak function built into it. edit: ps here is our 'demo' within your site: http://demo3.interactivetools.com/current/artman2/042/16508/index.html Thank you for taking the time to read this! I have to agree with the rest as the pagebreak feature would really make this software complete. I mean if most it not all of the opensource programs have it why doesn't this one? The way you currently have of accomplishing this task is sort of stone age in my opinion. It really distracts from a otherwise superb software. Tmod

Hi Guys, Thanks for the excellent feedback! This is something that I have added to our feature request list so perhaps it will be included in a future Article Manager release. :) In the meantime if you have any other questions please feel free to ask. Hi, I hate to resurrect this one, but we currently run AM 2 on a large content site and are looking to install it on 2 additional domains. However, the lack of a page break feature is keeping us from moving forward. I have read the tutorials on current methods, but these methods don't seem to work well for us. We already have about 1000 pages up, so going back through and splitting them manually is not an option. Is there an estimated time frame for a feature like this being added. I love AM, and i hate most of the other content managers i have demo'd /installed, but this feature is becoming more and more critical, especially for content sites whose revenue is generated as a result of multiple page views. More pages views means more ads clicked or more CPM, so I am sure you can see the importance of something like this. As a reco, maybe building in two ways to do it: 1) Allow for a default of X Characters and then split the page 2) Also allow the user to insert a page break on the Article CREATE screen Thanks! LC

Hi LostCoder, Thanks for your post! I can't really give you a time frame for when this feature will be included with the software, however our development team is aware that many users have requested this feature. Let us know if you have any other questions. ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Jake Swanson - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Can you please advise how to do this using the new default install which i believe should suit using Div tags? We must also consinder i have edited my article pages to also include the link to "view authors other articles" so would like to contiue using this thanks although in time will chnage the overall layout design. thanks in advance. Hi Steve, Thanks for posting. Firstly, you'll need to make two additional copies of your articlePage.html template. Name these "articlePage2.html" and "articlePage3.html". Now you'll need to modify your articlePage.html template to include the code for additional page links. Add this code wherever you'd like those links to appear:
<!-- templateIf : $article.content:limitParagraphs(5-9)$ ne "" --> Page: <strong>1</strong> <a href="$published.articlePage2.url$">2</a> <!-- /templateIf --> <!-- templateIf : $article.content:limitParagraphs(10+)$ ne "" --> <a href="$published.articlePage3.url$">3</a> <!-- /templateIf --> Next, you'll need to find the $article.content$ placeholder on your template. Replace it with this: $article.content:limitParagraphs(1-4)$ For your articlePage2.html template, use this code for your page links:
<!-- templateIf : $article.content:limitParagraphs(5-9)$ ne "" --> Page: <a href="$published.articlePage.url$">1</a> <strong>2</strong> <!-- /templateIf --> <!-- templateIf : $article.content:limitParagraphs(10+)$ ne "" --> <a href="$published.articlePage3.url$">3</a> <!-- /templateIf --> And replace your $article.content$ placeholder with this: $article.content:limitParagraphs(5-9)$ Now on your articlePage3.html template, use this code for your page links:
<!-- templateIf : $article.content:limitParagraphs(10+)$ ne "" --> Page: <a href="$published.articlePage.url$">1</a> <a href="$published.articlePage2.url$">2</a> <strong>3</strong> <!-- /templateIf --> Again, find your $article.content$ placeholder and replace it with this: $article.content:limitParagraphs(10+)$ Once this is done, you'll need to follow the steps Damon mentioned above in creating the different publishing rules for your article pages. When these steps are completed, publish these rules and your articles should now have multi-page links. Let us know if you need anything else! ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Jake Swanson - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com
