Suggestions: Looking for a great hosting provider? Can't Post

For starters, I would like to thank all of you for posting in the forum, providing excellent feedback and ideas. We really appreciate the suggestions, feedback, feature requests, etc that you come up with.

Anyhow... :)

I often get asked by clients - who should I use as a hosting provider? I find that I'm often pointing people to http://www.hostindex.com (a resource directory with links to thousands of hosting providers).

So I'm interested in your feedback. Who do you think is a great hosting provider? Which host did you choose for your Realty Manager, Article Manager, etc installation?

This would be a great way to recommend excellent web hosts to other people who are going to be setting up their software.

Please feel free to post your suggestions on who you think is a great web hosting provider! :)

Hosting4less.com

We have been with this company for over two years and have zero complaints. They have very fast and friendly email and Toll-Free tech support which is a rarity in most companies today.(Except for Interactivetools.com of coarse...)

Highly recommended!!

We have had our own dedicated server and T1 line for a few years now. But back when we used a hosting provider we used Verio. A little more expensive than most, but the service and support is top notch.

Hey there,

I host several sites with http://www.communitech.net and I haven't had any problems yet. I've been dealing with them for several years now.

http://crystaltech.com

They are proactive with messages about issues on servers, etc.

They have a very nice control center that gives you much more control over your site backend than most hosts I have examined.

Their pricing is nice and their service has been great.

I'd agree with CoachRichard. CrystalTech is an extremely customer-friendly and reseller-friendly host. I'm not a developer and I don't resell their hosting, but I've used them with about 4-5 sites for the last 3 years or so, with no problems whatsoever.

Most importantly, their customer service is phenomenal. Though I've had no issues with them, whenever I have a question about something I get immediate feedback and answers. They also have a well-attended forum for their customers.

One last thing...they're a Windows NT host. No Unix or Linux.

I've personally used Communitech for a few years and found them good as well. Their shared hosting plans include Majordomo, which is a huge benefit if you're maintaining a mailing list. One complaint, though, Article Manager and other CGI scripts seem to run slowly on their server. Maybe it's just my particular server, but it's achingly slow.

Another great service is GossamerHost. This is a service provided by Gossamer Threads and is tailored to the CGI/SQL users. They are also focused on high performance rather than price only. So if you want a very professional host, high quality and great service this may be the answer for you.

Re: [Luke] Suggestions: Looking for a great hosting provider? [In reply to] Can't Post

Just a quick suggestion to people looking for hosting. Try to find a good domain registration service and a seperate hosting company. That way YOU have control of your domains and can move from host to host. I've come across so many cases of clients falling out with hosting companies who registered domains for them, and it can be a real pain to leverage control of the domain again. At least if you have a seperate name reg service with DNS control you can switch to a new host in around 2 days.

Also beware of long term hosting deals, I pre paid for 3 years on a Raq server with a UK company, the company were great, 3 years ago, since multiple mergers etc, the support is very poor (if you can find the new number on the site) and the people have no idea of customer service, to the point i'll shoot myself before renew with them, and bandwidth charges are ludicrous in todays modern broadband world.

So keep flexible and keep control of your own domain.

I've just setup some new space using my own domain (point name servers) with a company http://www.34sp.com, no idea about the background but they are VERY cheap (£15/$23 a year!) and so far things seem good, at the price if it goes down hill ill just move dns to another host.

I purchased your auto script and it is insane.
We purchased it for our hosting client and they also are real happy. More importantly, your support has been amazing and is worth three times the amount we paid for yoru services.

Just to throw in my two cents... I've been using a local-to-Vancouver hosting provider for the last six months -- http://www.ehosting.ca

So far, their servers are wonderful, their control panel is custom built and top notch, and most importantly for me and my five(!) domains, they have unlimited domains & subdomains for the same monthly price and their customer service is second only to interactivetools... Wink

I have 2 sites running on Site5.com servers, running heavy hitters like Photopost, Censura, AM, TS, VB, etc. I can equate their courteousness only to that of IT. One of my sites has suffered a couple of downtimes, but they explain why and work hard to get things back up promptly. They are very good to their clients. Always visit a service's forum before you sign on. You can tell a lot from there.

Re: [Fraser] Suggestions: Looking for a great hosting provider? [In reply to] Can't Post

Greetings

I am sorry to say many clients of mine developing higher traffic sites have had many repeated problems with communitech.

Communitech literally closed down sites on several Hyperseek owners and outlaws programs that that they feel take up a lot of bandwidth.

The folks that had trouble were developers not regular hosters. I love theri control panel ...and speed and reliability was always good.

I reccomend different hosts to my clients depending on what they need and such.

Those running large corporate sites I always send to rackshack for a managed server.

Those who want all the features but have little funds I send to CIHOST. My experience with them is that from time to time they are not so help BUT there is 24 hour toll free support and when in a rush I use it. It really is the most generous IP based service I have seen.

I would also suggest to folks who are NOT developers..or want to learn to be not to go to cihost directly but come to myself..or another reseller who includes teaching the basics in their hosting. While last I checked CIHOSt's prices were $22 a month for gigs of space and lots of bandwidth ...and a reseller account would charge slightly more....a reseller my clients get a Guarantee of a four hour response to service inquiries. This may sound like a small thing...If you have ever gone nuts not being able to get your site up or get the assistance you need... this would be a huge factor in decisions. In addition the sites are on different servers which seem to not have the problems their general ones have had at times (many years ago there was a fiasco where cihost lost its data on amny machines...My hosting accounts were all fine....those of my own hosted on regular cihost were not:(

One thing I know from running unix server...Sometimes there will be problems EVERYWHERE. Virtualis was really hot for a while...then staff moved on and they were awful...I have no idea how they are now.Best.com was 100% relaible for a time. It is important to know that things change..a lot and often...and if they start going downhill...be prepared to either wait it ot (if it is worth it) or leave .

Best

Also, here is a heads up guys,

Beware of http://www.netfirms.com This is the WORSE provider I have ever seen. The down time is like 99.9% and it takes 3hrs to recieve email. I'm with them right now, but lucky for me I get a complete refund cause of the 30 day money back.

Keep away from http://www.netfirms.com.

Just moved all my sites to United Hosting - fantastic price, excellent support and highly recommended by all users on their forums. I took out a reseller account which I can use as I like to host upto 50 websites with 5,000 mb webspace, 50 gb bandwidth per month, 500 mailboxes they provide mysql, php, cgi, ssi, ssh access. Ensim software to manitain the back end of your websites from one control panel. and a ton of other stuff - all for £28 per month. They also provide a free enom account so you can resell domains as well.

Still looking for the catch - have not found it yet - hoping there is none!

I recently signed up for an account with byzhosting.com, and have been nothing but impressed with their speed and efficiency. [Nice and cheap, too - let's not forget that!] A co-worker recommended them to me and swears their customer support is second to none. I've personally had no reason contact them yet - which is a good sign to my mind...! :-)

I have signed up to ByzHosting after seeing them recommended here and looking around their site. They seemed ideal. However, the name server info they sent me is faulty and I have had no luck trying to contact their support. They only have e-mail support and that is being returned to me at the moment.

Has anybody else any experience with ByzHosting. I'm hoping this is only a blip in what is otherwise a good service??

Thanks, Bill.

Re: [glenschild] Suggestions: Looking for a great hosting provider? [In reply to] Can't Post

For about one year, I used hosting providers here in Switzerland. Some of them very kind and helpful, even some nice features, but... no helpline on week-ends or outside office hours! Which meant that, in August, two of my websites were out for more than three days (week-end plus National Day!). I decided that such long time-outs were not acceptable, and so I have been looking for other solutions, based upon two considerations:
a) fast, personal replies at any time (no automatized forms, prompt replies even during week-ends);
b) check on various forums for hosting providers consistently rated highly.
I did not find any meeting those expectations in Switzerland, so I looked abroad. I found two in the USA which seem to me to meet my expectations at affordable prices:
1) I have transferred in August one of my domains to http://inmotionhosting.com/ - friendly and prompt support, only 30 minutes timeout in nearly 6 weeks. I will still test it for some time, but looks convincing - and has been consistently praised by customers on various forums as one of the best providers on the market.
2) I may consider transferring two of my other domains to http://hostegrity.com/ or its parent company, http://theprimehost.com/. Not only do they offer highly attractive packages for hosting multiple domains with a lot of bandwidth, but inquiry requests received very fast, personal, precise and courteous replies. Moreover, I must confess that I feel attracted by their statement: "Hostegrity strives to meet our namesake and provide our users with a hosting service that is honest and ethical. We find the market today is sadly lacking in this area." Well, exactly what we have all been looking for, istn't it?
The only weakness for both is that they only offer webmail of the type Horde or NeoMail - there are much better webmail tools available today, such as IceWarp of Merak, but most hosting providers seem still to opt for Horde, NeoMail and the like. However, this matters only for people who use webmail a lot, i.e. not for most of us.
If any other participant on this forum have made some experiences with those two hosting providers, it would be interesting to hear from them. I came to the conclusion that they might be among the best ones after spending days looking for the best solution this summer.
Hope the info can be helpful.

I've been using "Ace Of Space" for about 4 years now.

Their customer support is terrific...never had a problem using them.

www.aceofspace.com is the website and they are located in the area of "interactive Tools"!

If you call or see them....tell them Murray from www.dealers-by-street.com says "Hi!"

They've got a terrific "Templates Library" right on their main site as well.....worth a peek.

I posted a reply to this suggestion and recommended www.aceofspace.com while remembering that you are located in B.C.....as are they.

For folks looking for an excellent provider in Ontario I'd strongly recommend considering GSL Web Design ( www.gslwebdesign.com ) . They are located in Pickering, Ontario, but have clients from all over the province. Their pricing is very fair but most importantly their SERVICE is terrific.

The owner, Jorgen, has several support staff and the entire "team" is involved in the creative aspect of any new project. Once launched they assist the client solving any problem within hours...if not sooner!

I have 3 sites with them and can't say enough about their dedication to my needs...so if your business is in the GTA...or anywhere in Ontario...please consider them.
