Pretty URLs and SEO

I'm not too experience on SEO, but I heard urls are valued more if they have relevent keywords in them. Before setting up my website I want to have a system in place so I don't have to redo things later. I wanted to see if anyone knows if SSI (server side includes) are the way to go to clean up the urls such as long search strings. For example I reduced: http://builderreprealty.com/builders/exec/search.cgi?sort_order=5%2C123%2Cforward&lfield25_keyword=Austin&search=1&perpage=10&marknew=1&euro_numbers=0&lfield5_min=&lfield5_max=&lfield9_min=&lfield9_max=&lfield10_min=&lfield10_max=&shownew=&search=++Search+Listings++&template=austin_new_homes_test1.html&pagenum=1 To: http://builderreprealty.com/test.shtml With the SSI (Server Side Include): <!--#include virtual="builders/exec/search.cgi?sort_order=5%2C123%2Cforward&lfield25_keyword=Austin&search=1&perpage=10&marknew=1&euro_numbers=0&lfield5_min=&lfield5_max=&lfield9_min=&lfield9_max=&lfield10_min=&lfield10_max=&shownew=&search=++Search+Listings++&template=austin_new_homes_test1.html"--> On an empty webpage. Thanks, David

Hi, Thanks for the post! Search Engine Optimization is not really an area that we are experts in, this however is the right forum for you to be posting in and there may be someone here who can provide both of us with an answer. So even though I am not sure how the workaround you mentioned will be treated by search engines, I have done a little research into dynamic SEO links and came up with the following information:
"Google does index dynamically generated webpages, including .asp pages, .php pages, and pages with question marks in their URLs". This article then goes on to explain potential problems of a dynamic link, and offers a few solutions including submitting a detailed sitemap to google. One other suggestion that this article talks about is creating a rewrite engine for your page. You can view the full article here: http://www.marketposition.com/blog/archives/general_seo_tips/index.html Hopefully this will help to point you in the right direction. :) Cheers, Chet Woodside - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Chet, Thanks for the info. It seems like that method will work that I mentioned above. The mod rewrite could be useful if you want something more complex and comprehensive. David

David, you are absolutely right in your suspicions, and the method you use is one I use on my own sites with search engine success. Although search engines do spider and rank some dynamic pages (usually with just one parameter), part of the problem can be not only the URLs but also the issue of exactly the same content being accessed in different ways - typically a problem for blogs or forums, for example. _____ Steve
