What hosts have Perl 5.8+? Can't Post

Our hosting provider claimed they were running 5.61, but a tester file showed we're actually on a server with 5.0. Neither version meets AM 2.0 requirements.

Called the host to find out why we only have 5.0 and when we'd be upgraded to 5.8. They were very vague, saying only that they are slowly upgrading everything to 5.61 and 5.8 isn't even on their radar screens.

Anyone have tips on reliable, reasonably-priced U.S.-based hosting providers that meet AM requirements, including Perl 5.8+?

Hi there!

For some bizarre reason that I can't quite figure out (I blame programmers...) 5.008 and 5.8 are actually the same thing. :)

Your server is probably actually running 5.006 (which is what older versions of Article Manager required), and while I can't make any guarantees... I've installed Article Manager on a few servers running 5.006 without any trouble. That said -- I'm not a programmer, so I can't make any guarantees, but 5.006 seems to work fine for the basic installation.

In any event -- 5.008 (also known as 5.8.0) is a pretty old version (released in 2002). Most servers should be able to handle it just fine. :)

I hope this helps! Let me know if you run into any trouble. :)

Thanks for that info, Donna.

I ran a tester script that revealed our server is actually running 5.005 (5.00503, if you want to be picky). Our hosting provider is upgrading on their schedule and will not budge from it, which is a bit frustrating. And as I mentioned earlier, their upgrade will be to 5.6, not 5.8.

They've offered us the option to switch hosting plans to one that would put our sites on a server running 5.6. If I was certain I wouldn't have problems installing and running AM 2.0 I would go for that option. Was it 2.0 that you successfully implemented on a 5.6 server?

One other possibility that one CSR at the hosting company mentioned - they have a Windows server that is already running 5.8. I am not too keen on switching from Unix/Linux to Windows but I don't have enough solid knowledge of potential trouble spots to completely rule it out. Any thoughts?

Hi there,

Hmm, they're pretty far behind! :)

Yes, I've had 2.0 running on a few servers running 5.6 -- no noticable problems so far, but keep in mind that it hasn't been fully tested there. To be safe, you'd probably want to go with a server that has 5.8 on it.

Article Manager 2 will run fine on Windows -- we actually do all of our internal development on Windows -- although I understand your reluctance to switch. ;) Getting installed on a Windows server can occasionally involve a few more snags than Linux, but once it's setup, there's generally no difference -- and we'll give you a hand the whole way as well. :)

Re: [Donna] What hosts have Perl 5.8+? [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been having problems trying to get AM2 installed on my 1and1 webspace. The installer tells me I need perl 5.8 and won't go any further - 1and1 is only running 5.6 - when I ask them I get a useless reply from someone in a call centre.

Any ideas ?

Hi Alastair,

Thanks for posting. Smile

You can try asking 1and1 if it's possible to migrate to another hosting package that supports Perl 5.8. If not, you might want to look at switching hosting providers in order to run Article Manager 2.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

Thanks Jake - I've pretty much given up on 1and1. I'm going to switch to Nativespace. For people in the UK, they look like a really good webhost - good price, good spec and really helpful when you email them.

My web host had Perl 5.8.8 on their server.

This is perl, v5.8.8 built for i686-linux

Been using them for 3 years and so i can say they are reliable. Connection wise, they are fast. No complain. Getting good download speed for my account.

Cool

I think they have been around since 2001. Quite a good track record, imo. http://www.mxhub.com

Good luck.
