Question for Theo?
Can't Post
Hi Theo, Postng this as a question to you, cause here: http://interactivetools.com/hosting/ I am told "Theo's been managing our servers for years, and he's definitely not a trained server administrator!" I am sure you are more of a tech guy then I am... since I am not at all (I just play around... hobby stuff...) maybe you can provide some feedback on ServerBeach's dedicated servers. I can't find much info on their site and tried chating but no one showed up... here's my question: Are their servers barebones, or do they come with a bunch of installed stuff already? Do they keep the software updated? I am thinking of, for example, PHP, MySQL, ImageMagik, etc., that sort of thing... Are these in place, or they just provide the machines, barebones, and that's that? I am asking because there are other packages out there that offer dedicated servers (CIHOST for example) that come with a load of stuff, it's not just the machine. I think they call this co-managed, or something. (PLEASE EVERYONE, THIS IS NOT AN ENDORSMENT OF CIHOST - IN FACT I AM TRYING TO MOVE AWAY FROM THERE!!!) Just asking cause I am no expert, and I can't manage a server if it's barebones... so I need to know... in which case, maybe DreamHost would be the best option... trying to figure this out. Thanks, Joao

Joao, Thanks for the post! The machines come with operating system, which will generally include PHP and mySQL. You'll definitely want to invest in a Control Panel to help you manage the server. I use Plesk. I didn't chose it for any special reason, but I stick with it because that's what I know! :D Plesk will help you do a lot of the standard hosting stuff...set up domains, email accounts, mySQL databases, look at web log reports, etc. You can host up to 100 domains with the version of Plesk that Server Beach offers. Things like ImageMagick do not come standard, but Plesk and cPanel are so popular you should be able to find tutorials on installing just about anything. Some people prefer cPanel, but for now I'm sticking with what I know. Generally when I run into a problem, I poke around Google for a while. If I can't fix it within, say, an hour or less, I'll fill out a support request at Server Beach. Support tickets are $15 each, so it's a pretty dang good value. You might try Live Chat with their sales team again, generally before I get a new server I will ask them a million questions to make sure I'm making the right choice. I find the performance of the self-managed servers really great, and I find the support tickets to be a GREAT value at $15 an issue. I hope that helps. Remember that if you order with our referral code (Z7VTWFYH7S), you'll get a $100 credit after three months. Theo Wiersma Project Manager
