Data Collection Script to work with AM2 Can't Post

Hi I am building a website using AM 2 and have a question about how best to tackle this question:

Site - Tulsiani Investments - (http://www.prosoftconsultingtestsites.com/cms2/publish/).

The client has the objective of capturing as much data (email addresses, contact information etc.) as possible, consequently, the client hoping that visitors to the site will be prompted to enter contact information prior to accessing any of the “Free Resources”. Under the Resources heading (navigation on left hand side of the page) there are a few page links:

  • Articles
  • Free Books
  • Forms & Tools

The objective the client has is that a visitor to the site would be able to click on the Articles link for example and see the list of articles, they may have the option to read the summary (or introduction to the article) but if they want to read the full article they will be directed to a contact forum where they will need to enter their contact information (e.g. First Name, Last Name, Email, Phone Number) and check a box indicating that they want to receive more information from Tulsiani Investments, if they decline to enter the infromation they will not be given access to the article if they enter their information they will have access to the article.

A good example of this can be seen at the following link - on this site if you want to read the article, by clicking on download, you need to fill out the form – ( http://www.taleo.com/research/whitepapers-research.php#QualityOfHire)

The current client site (Tulsiani Investments) has a stripped down version of this – if you click on any of the Tools for example you are prompted to enter email informaion (http://www.tulsianiinvestments.com/custom/index.cfm?id=63125 )

Hopefully by using some type of cookie setting returning visitors to the site would not be prompted to enter their contact information (unless of course they are visiting with a different browser for example). This is currently the case with the existing client site (http://www.tulsianiinvestments.com/custom/index.cfm?id=63125) once the contact info has been entered the visitor can view other articles, tools etc. without being prompted to enter information again.

The next question of course if this is possible is where do we send the forum data? We are exploring a couple of different newsletter, databas type solutions. One that seems to fit the client needs is a prodcut called Send Studio – newsletter manager, membership manager which may be a good place for us to send data as this is what they will potentially be using for their newsletter sign up forum. Really I wish that you guys (Interactive Tools) made some type of a newsletter, membership manager type solution as I would prefere to work with you exclusively for this project.

---------------

I have been talking to Mike B about this in Priority Consulting (Mike you have been GREAT thanks for your help!). Mike was suggesting that we may need an external script on the server that would handle this type of thing. If anyone could help with this it would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks

You've pretty much got everything worked out.

Visitor visits first time, no cookie set, so display form to retrieve data. Once form is submitted, user is sent back to page where small script sees a cookie has been recorded for that page and thus displays the entire article. Of course you would need to decide if user get this form only the first time to site, or if one time for each article.

Your data should be ported to a database (most likely MySQL). You wouldn't necesarily need to buy a fancy newsletter program unless there is some special bell or whistle you really want. Try to save money where you can.

Hope that gives you a bit of direction.

Regards,
Michael

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply.

I apologize for taking so long to get back to as I thought I had this sorted out with a programmer that I normally work with. Turns out that he is not familiar with the code that AM is written and I need to look at other options.

I will send you an email as I would like to talk to you about how to get this type of thing setup for a client.

Thanks Mike.

Hi there,

Just for some extra information... he wouldn't actually need to know anything about Perl. All of this would be done externally to Article Manager, so it could be done in whatever language your programmer is most comfortable in. :)

Since Article Manager creates static pages for the majority of the content, and the few dynamic pages can work with any file extension, there's no need to use a language you're not familiar with. Any language will do. :)
