Search not searching all of the site

I've just received the search engine SW (free install by yourselves). Nice package, excellent service. I've two questions. 1) If someone does a basic search, they get a list of results, followed by the "advanced search" option. However, the 'advanced search" option doesn't really stand out and could be easily missed by someone doing a quick scan. Anyway to easily change this (e.g. by changing the HTML code to make the option in RED BOLD)? If so, could you tell me the exact change as I have the technical understanding of a rock. 2) The search seems to scan my site fine. However, even though the SW is apparently set up to scan all my root directory, it doesn't seem to pick up anything in my sub-directories for my discussion board (phpBB) or my blogger (WordPress). Is this a know issue? Can it be easily resolved? Webmaster: www.directory-france.com Webmaster: www.france-property-and-information.com/directory-worldwide-property-and-services/

Hi FranceFan, Thanks for posting. I'll go over your questions one at a time. 1. Search Engine uses an HTML template system to control the look and feel of it's pages. Our templates are normal HTML - with a few custom tags - that you can view normally in your browser. This makes it easy to look at the templates and see your changes before you upload them to your live site, and they're as easy to modify as any other HTML page. Your templates are usually located on the server here: /cgi-bin/searchengine/templates/ I've found that one of the best ones to start with is the /cgi-bin/searchengine/templates/search_results.html template. By default, your search results are based off of the look and feel of this template. Think of it like a blueprint for how all the results are going to look. So using FTP, download this template from your web server to your computer. Here is a link to our online documentation regarding this template in case you want to read it: http://www.interactivetools.com/docs/doc.cgi?/searchengine/doc_page43.html You can modify the templates as easily as any other HTML file, using your favorite text or WYSIWYG web page editor such as HomeSite, UltraEdit, Dreamweaver, FrontPage, etc. When you open up this template (in the code view) you will 3 different elements: 1. HTML, which determines the page structure and appearance. 2. 'Template Cells': Some sections of HTML are only displayed in specific circumstances, such as a "Not Found" message on the search results page. Templatecells are used to define the boundaries of these sections. 3. 'Placeholders': Templates use Placeholders to tell the program where to insert content. They are the things with the $ around them like $description$ which is the placeholder for the description of the page. Each placeholder corresponds to different content. Now with the template open, find the section at the top of the template that looks like this:
.f,.f:link,.f a:link {font-family:arial,sans-serif; color:#6f6f6f} Just change the color:#6f6f6f to color:##FF0000. Save the change and re-upload the template back to the server using FTP. 2. Search Engine includes and Ignore List to exclude certain files and directories. All you do is add the file prefix or file path that you want ignored. I always find it easier to modify the files in the Category Editor, where you can choose specific directories to ignore. Then I add the file prefixes to the ignore list. I hope that helps explain, but let me know if you need any more details. Regards, Cliff Stefanuk - Customer Service Manager support@interactivetools.com

Cliff Thanks very much for your suggestions. I've started editing using FrontPage and it works great. Reference not all my files being searched, I've checked categories and don't see that anything has been excluded (the install was done by interactivetools). I would like to be able to have the search include my Blogger (WordPress based) and my Discussion Forum (phpBB) based. Perhaps the problem is that these are based on PHP and your search engine cannot handle PHP? Hi Doug. Thanks for keeping us up to date . Search Engine is setup to search through and static file on your webserver including files that have a .php extenstion. The problem I think you are running into though, is that while all your pages have a .php extentions, they are actually being created dynamically with content from a database. I don’t know for sure how your blogging software runs, but I am pretty sure the phpBB part is all dynamic. Could you double check that for me? If either one of them creates static files, Search Engine will work great; if they are dynamic though, perhaps there are search engines built into them already. Just keep me up to date . ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com
