Search Engine Script on Earthlink??? Can't Post

has anyone set up the search engine script on Earthlink? My client is hosted there & it has bee a headache. I spoke with tech support yesterday, I was told that I cannot run a custom script from the cgi-bin, that I would need to create a new directory to run it from. So, I set up a new directory named "script", reset all my permissions and it still does not run. I called Earthlink this morning to verify the perl path, and asked if there was anything earthlink needed to do to allow that new directory to run a cgi script (besides me setting the permissions to 755). I was told that the directory would run the script and that it did not work because my script was "broken".

Now, a question, if the perl path is #!/usr/local/bin/perl do I also need to change the path #!c:\Perl\bin\perl.exe to reflect this as well?

Thanks in advance from an extremely confused designer......

Hi kmny!

Thanks for your post. :)

If you're changing the perl path, you only want to edit the cgi files in the exec directory -- that would be the admin.cgi and the search.cgi. Don't touch the files in the data directory.

When you're saving the files, make sure you're not saving them in a windows format -- Windows formats tend to add additional "escape" characters at the end of each line. Perl doesn't understand what these characters are, and so it ... well, it's not real happy with it anyway. :)

If you're having trouble, you can take advantage of our free installation by submitting an installation request and we'd be happy to help you out. :)

Thanks Donna,

Mike on your support team fixed it for me, turns out the path to perl was incorrect. Earthlink's perl path is /usr/local/bin/perl

Thanks for all your help!

Hi Donna I just thought I would add a tip about this here because you have raised a very valid issue which can often cause scripts to break when uploading from Windows to Unix/Linux servers. My tip is to upload using an FTP programme like WSFTP because this automatically converts the line endings for you. Make sure you do not upload the scripts in Binary format because that is for images. It also works in reverse - i.e. downloading from UNIX to Windows via FTP also converts the line endings. Another way is to use a Macintosh - they have a neat utility in their text editors to convert the line endings into whatever format you need. Hope this tip is useful - it took me ages to find tricks like this because people don't like to share the info, but this is a nice "sharin" community :) Cheers DataFerret
