Customizing SearchEngine Output?
|
Can't Post

Greetings... ITools must be addictive!... Soon I will own all IT scripts I guess... Well, I am about to embark on the 4th, SearchEngine, but I have a few questions, as I want it for a particular purpose... let me know if this is possible... Here's the scenario: I want to place a collection of eBooks online. Something like this: /library/ index.shtml readme1st.shtml terms.shtml /library/bin/ .htaccess /library/bin/book1/ bk1.chp.1.shtml bk1.chp.2.shtml bk1.chp.3.shtml /library/bin/book2/ bk2.chp.1.shtml bk2.chp.2.shtml bk2.chp.3.shtml /library/bin/book3/ bk3.chp.1.shtml bk3.chp.2.shtml bk3.chp.3.shtml With time, there might be well over 1000 books online, each with many chapters under its own folder, so this could end up in a lot of pages to be parsed/searched... if I decide to follow the original books' page numbering system, may be in the 10s of thousands with time... The purpose of using Search Engine is not as much to allow people to find a chapter and read the whole thing, but to find quotes in context. So, a search for "help" for example, could turn out 200 hits, from 15 different books, and all the visitor would be able to see after search would be the search returns... This would require, to be useful, that I should be able to configure SE to output 'x' words before and after the word being searched... and remove from the output template the link to the full page. Am I correct in thinking this can be done? That is for starters... because next I would want something else... to be able to instruct SE to output some results from each file/page searched, as follows. Each .shtml file would have at the very top these meta info, and other as pertinent, case-by-case: <meta author="Mary Wise" title="The Wise Method" chapter="Chap. 15" page="232" year="1923" libCard="8976967" ISBN="0-12123-234324-X" contributed="John M." other=""> etc. ...so for the output, SE would be outputting something like this: word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word support word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word ............................................ The Wise Method, Mary Wise, 1923, Chap. 15, p. 232, ISBN:0-12123-234324-X Contributed by John M. word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word support word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word ............................................ Great Scripts, ITools, 2004, Chap. 5, p. 32, ISBN:0-12645-111324-X Contributed by ITools. ... and so on... Can this be done? And how complex would it be to get the info / each page's metatags output to the results pages?!... Also, can I have SE work behind a .htaccess protected area? (The bin and below...) Also, does SE use MySQL as a backbone? It would be neat to have all this stuff set via admin, but this not being possible... any clues welcome. Thanks! Joao PS. I keep checking the forum... as per another post on this forum (Meta_Description_Tag_Not_Displayed_In_Results_P21416) it looks like metatags' descriptions cannot be output to the search results pages... Would there be an alternaive way of outputting the info as per above, hidding it, and forcing the script to find and output it when a page returns hits?... THKS. J.

Hi Joa1, I read through your concerns here and I want to point out several things: - Search Engine has a recommended limit of 500 pages. I can see that you'll easily exceed this limit in the foreseeable future.
- You can't customize it the way you wanted in Search Engine. While Search Engine automatically publishes words before and after the keyword, you won't be able to specify exactly how many words before and after. I think for your scenario Article Manager may be better for you.
In any case, I believe Search Engine may not be the best tool for your needs. If you want to refund it and go with Article Manager instead let me know and I can step you through the process. I hope this helps. If you have other questions please let me know. Cheers, Eric Lau - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Hi Eric, Thanks for posting. I already own Article Manager, but I don't think it can be used the way I want... at least, not without some serious customization which I would not know how to do... Thanks anyway. I will try find a script that can do what I need. This is more like those search engines that are distributed with e-libraries on CD-ROM... the only differenec being, as said, that I would probably want to just cut off the access t the final article maybe, and get only those little chunks of text with searched keywords inserted with so many words before and after. Keep up the good work! I will keep an eye on SE anyway and see what it develops into in the future. Joao
