Custom search.html for each category Can't Post

Hello. I understand how to use the product to search an entire site, and to create categories for users to search within. We also have customized the look/feel of template search_form.html.

However we want this customized search_form.html to change depending on the category/directory they are searching (different section of website with a different look and feel, on same machine, etc).

Is there any way to do this? To have multiple search_forms?

Thanks.

Hi beall2,

Thanks for posting, and welcome to the forum!

I think that the easiest way to do this would be to simply create separate static pages for the specific category/directory that you want to search. All you need to do is copy the sample code that is shown when you first log into the progam, paste it onto a HTML page and adjust the code so that it's specific to the category that you want to search.

So for example you would access your separate search pages like this:

www.yoursite.com/news_search.html
www.yoursite.com/sports_search.html
www.yoursite.com/archive_search.html

This will give you a hard coded page that links to Search Engine.

Give that a try and let me know if that is what you are looking for Smile

Re: [Cliff] Custom search.html for each category [In reply to] Can't Post

Cliff,

Thanks for the fast reply!

We successfully created a standalone html page (for Category A, for simplicity) with the search code inserted, but when we get search results back, it is in the look/feel of the other category (B for simplicity).

So I assume we should:
-- put the search_form.html back to the standard look (remove Cat B template look)
-- create another standalone html page for Category B

But what to do about the results pages...can that be formatted specifically to match each of these x_search.html pages we are generating as well??

Thanks ahead of time!

Re: [beall2] Custom search.html for each category [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi beall2,

What you can do is specify the skin, or template that a form will use as it's results template by setting up a hidden input field like this:

Code
<input type="hidden" name="skin" value="search_results_categoryA.html">

So the easiest thing to do would be to just make a copy of your existing _search_results.html template, and re-name it something appropriate like 'search_results_categoryA.html'. Then make the template look the way that you need to.

On the page that you are searching from, just add the line of code above in the <form> tags, and you should be set! Let me know how that goes for you Smile

Re: [Cliff] Custom search.html for each category [In reply to] Can't Post

Cliff,

Closer :). I now have 2 separate folder searches available, with different looks and feels, etc. There were various small things to edit as well, but it's all working now nicely.

So my last inquiry (I promise), is these various search and search_results files are all living in search/templates/. Can we possibly put the appriopriate search and search_results file within the directory that it is searching? Since it references style and graphics that live over there, it makes more sense to use that these files also live over there. Is that doable? Some pointer changes I'm sure? To the cgi files, etc?

Thanks again,
Sharon

Re: [beall2] Custom search.html for each category [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Sharon,

Thank you for the forum post Smile.

Search engine is set so that it will look for template files in that one folder. You can't move those files somewhere else. This is by design, and here's why.

From an organizational and management point of view, it is actually better that the template files stay in one place because that you regardless of your directory changes, your search engine will still work. If those template files are in various folders on the server, any changes to the file structure can potentially break the program and it can be a very tedious task to figure out why. About references, since it is common to reference styles and graphics in other directories, this shouldn't pose a organizational nor performance problem.

I hope this helps. If you have other questions please let me know.
