Category Editor vs. Ignore List vs. Robots.txt

Can you explain the difference between changing the files in the default category and adding/removing files and directories from the ignore list? They seem to serve the same function and also seem to update each other when a change is made in one place. I just want to be sure I'm using them correctly. When would I use one over the other? (I currently don't provide category searches, if that matters.) Also, is it possible to substitute a robots.txt file for the ignore list? It'd be easier for me since now I'm having to maintain two lists. Thanks for your help!

Hi kmarnold, You are right that they both have the same effect in adding and removing files that you can search through, but there isn't one way that you should use over the other. Personally I like to go to the 'Files' list in the Category editor since it's a little faster and cleaner to ignore entire directories or files. I usually hit the ignore list when I want to remove something that is in there, or when I want to exclude certain words. While it isn't possible to substitute a robots.txt file for the ignore list, you could just copy the data that you have in there into the ignore list, and once it's in the ignore list it should be pretty easy to maintain. I hope that helps clarify, but if you need any more details just let me know Regards, Cliff Stefanuk - Customer Service Manager support@interactivetools.com
