Base Search Dir - have i got this right? Can't Post

Hi there.

I have SE installed on my website. Am i right in saying that the directory that you type in the Base Search Dir box is the only directory that SE searches?

My problem is I have a lot of files I do not want SE to search, some of which are within the same directory as files I do want to search. I could go through all my files and enter the files I want excluding into the ignore list but then I will have to remember to do this each time a new page is added.

It's always possible that I could be typing the wrong address into the Base Search Dir box, i want it to search mywebsite/public_html/cgi-bin/jm/data.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regard,
Nikki Smile

Hi Nikki.

Thanks for posting!

I think you almost have the right idea. The base directory is where all your searches will start from by default. That means that any file or folder that is inside your base search will be searched. If it makes it easier, you can stop entire folders from being searched as well as all files starting with a specific set up characters.

As an example, you could set one folder to not be searched at all, and then upload all the files you don’t want to be searched, to that folder.

Alternatively, if you only want to be able to search certain files within a folder but not others, you could give the prefix “_d_” to files that you don’t want to search. You would then tell search engine to not search files that begin with that prefix. You don’t have to use “_d_” as the prefix.

If you only want the “mywebsite/public_html/cgi-bin/jm/data” to be searched then you can set that as your base directory.

I hope this helps. If there is anything that I can go into more detail on, just let me know Smile.
