Uploading Images Through the WYSIWYG Editor

Hey Everyone. I am starting this forum thread as a place to discuss the new addon for Page Publisher that lets you upload files right through the WYSIWYG editor. Here's a link to the tutorial: http://www.interactivetools.com/products/pagepublisher/tutorials/wysiwyg_image_upload.html ***edit*** 2006-05-15 - Tutorial Updated. Let me know if you have any questions . ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Great tutorial and a neat solution! You mention that "...you must have an image_select publishing tag as the last field on all of your pages." In fact, this is not necessary. In "...tiny_mce/plugins/advimage/image.htm", line 65, the onClick says: onClick="PopUpWindow('http://www.yoursite.com/cgi-bin/pp/pp.cgi?add_file_select=1&thispagenum=1&fieldnum=300&allowupload=1&display_upload=1&display_url=1&WYSIWYG=1', '440','240')" The critical part is thispagenum=1. We only need one image_select publishing tag on page number 1. Page numbers are shown in "...cgi-bin/pp/data/page.dat". In fact, one could create a "phantom" page with just the image_select tag, add it in Page Publisher, get its number, and write this number in the thispagenum= field above. One step further would be to train users to use this phantom page, which then becomes an "Image management" page simply to maintain their image repository. The main reason is the image delete function, which is not available in the advimage hack from Ross.

I've set this up as per tutorial but am getting the following message from the "File Manager" window when trying to upload an image: "Upload directory does not exist!" My various paths are correct and the relevant images directory exists: _select_menus.html: var uploadPath = "http://www.domainname/images/"; directory.cgi: my $uploadURL = "http://www.domainname//images/"; my $uploadDIR = "/home/domaindir/public_html/images/"; Incidentally, these are the same path settings I have set in PP setup options. I even tried to set the paths to the /pp/uploads/ path as per tutorial but I get the same error. I have tried setting dir permissions to 755 and 777 but no change. Is there some code I can set to show which dir it is trying to access? Any ideas?

Hi paceit! I think we're addressing this via off-forum support, so we'll switch it over there so we can get a look at your server and see exactly what the issue is. Thanks! We should get this up and running soon. :) Donna

Hi Ross: Does the image upload dialog permit browing the local computer to locate the actual image? (It's hard to tell from the screenshot - I don't see a browse button). Tony Cook Searoom Communications, Toronto, Canada www.searoom.com www.boatsell.com www.boatsell.ca

Hi Tony, Thanks for your email. Yes, absolutely! That's what this add on does -- the ability to simply enter a URL is already there, the add-on allows you to upload a file directly. :) Donna

Hi there. Thanks for posting and welcome to the board! There are a few things I can think of as being the problem there so I'd like to take a closer look at your server. Would you mind passing me some FTP details through a support request: https://www.interactivetools.com/support/email_support.cgi I know it's not going to be anything major so once I have had a look, I should be able to get you back on track . ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Hi there. Thanks for posting! It would actually be quite difficult to have that same image manager handle files as well because it's fairly specific to images right now. I am going to keep this on my to-do list though as it am thinking it could be something that gets done through the link tool. Of course, I am not sure if/when it will be ready to roll. I'll keep you up to date . ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Hi Webmac, Thanks for the post! It's a little hard to tell what may be happening here without taking a closer look at this issue, what you may want to do is send us a support request with your ftp details. Once I have these details I'll be happy to take a closer look at this for you. :) You can fill out a support request here: https://www.interactivetools.com/support/email_support.cgi Does this help Webmac? I look forward to hearing from you soon! Cheers, Chet Woodside - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Hi, I have gone through the tutorial but haven't done something right. In the wysiwyg image pop-up I can choose to add a picture and it uploads okay, then refreshing that page I can select the image I just uploaded in the flip tab but it doesn't appear in the box below like the tutorial shows. When I check the html of the page the newly added picture shows an html img tag that lacks the picture identification at the end of the image tag. Does the upload directory have to be in the pp/images/uploads directory to work? I have them uploading to www.mysite.com/uploads. They are in there after going through the wysiwyg image window so seems to work that far. Any help would be appreciate, I have three customers wanting to use this feature. :-) Thanks, Rand

Hi Rand Thanks for posting! You don't need to have the upload script working out of the same upload folder as the rest of your Page Publisher but all the URLs and DIRs that you set while going through the tutorial will all need to point to the same place as one another. Now, the best way for me to have a look at what's going on here would be if you sent me a support request which you can fill out here: https://www.interactivetools.com/support/email_support.cgi How does that sound? I look forward to hearing from you . ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Hi there, I have done all the steps of the tutorial and I get the new pop-up window. The problem is that I don't see any browse button and instead under image manager I see this: |Add Picture to Drop Down| or Internal Server Any idea on what the problem might be? My domain is hosted on Dreamhost.com (Unix based server) Thanks,

Hi sadymo, Thanks for posting. You might want to check to see if permissions are set correctly on the "directory.cgi" file (they should be set at 755 or executable). If that doesn't resolve your problem, try going through each of the steps in the tutorial again to make sure that you've completed them correctly. If you're stumped, you can always submit a support request and we can take a look at this for you: https://www.interactivetools.com/support/email_support.cgi Let us know if you need anything else! ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Jake Swanson - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Hi - Does anyone have this addon working on a windows server? pp is running fine, and with this addon we can upload images, but the "Select Picture" dropdown just shows the words "select picture" - it will not show the images in the directory where they have been successfully uploaded. I opened a support ticket and had one response to check permissions, which I have done with the hosting company. The path is correct, and I don't know what else to look for...

I finally solved this running on a windows server - hope it helps someone ... In directory.pl, change the double quotes to single quotes for the following line: my $uploadDIR = "the value here is from same as in program dir on the Server Tab in Admin Setup"; Here's the rationale: Win32 platforms use the '\' character as a delimiter for paths in a file name (C:\like\this). However, Perl uses the '\' character as an escape code, to symbolize a special character like the line feed character ("\n") or the tab character ("\t"). So, if you try and open a file like this: open( MYFILE, "C:\temp\newfile.txt" ); you'll get an error. One solution is to replace each '\' with a double-'\', to show that you really mean to use that character, not an escape: open( MYFILE, "C:\\temp\\newfile.txt" ); Another solution is to use non-interpolating single quote strings, which lets Perl know not to use any special characters: open( MYFILE, 'C:\temp\newfile.txt' ); See the perlop documentation page for more information on the differences between single quotes (') and double quotes (").
