"Not Acceptable" Error message from PagePublisher Can't Post

Hello,
One of our web servers was just updated to Perl 5.8.8. All of a sudden Page Publisher receives an error when any action is attempted (add page, update pages, setup options, logoff, etc). This happens even though we can log on to Page Publisher and see the main window.

The error message is:
Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource /cgi-bin/pp/pp.cgi could not be found on this server.
Apache/2.2.6 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.6 OpenSSL/0.9.7a DAV/2 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_bwlimited/1.4 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 Server at www.larryjostillustration.com Port 80

Any ideas on why this could be happening? This occurs regardless if we reinstall PagePublisher in the cgi-bin or root directories. The install script runs fine, as does Listings Manager 2.52 which is also installed on the same server.

Thanks,
Eric

Re: [HDBC] "Not Acceptable" Error message from PagePublisher [In reply to] Can't Post

A quick google search seems to indicate it may be due to the Apache mod_security module. Have a look here:

Hope that helps!

Re: [Dave] "Not Acceptable" Error message from PagePublisher [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello Dave,

The system admin for our hosting service thinks that it might have something to do with the cookies being set by Page Publisher??

PP works until we try to edit a page. I've reinstalled the application and double checked the file / folder permissions. The behavior is the same in both IE and Firefox as well as on Windows and Mac.

Thanks for your suggestions on troubleshooting this. See the notes from our host below.

Hello Eric,

This what one of our Gurus pulled out of the log files. His translation is that it is unxpired cookies in your web browser. Try expiring all cookies and give it another whirl.

Here's the error:

[Tue Feb 12 10:05:41 2008] [error] [client 209.20.232.157] ModSecurity: Access denied with code 406 (phase 2). Pattern match "(?:\\\\b(?:(?:n(?:et(?:\\\\b\\\\W+?\\\\blocalgroup|\\\\.exe)|(?:map|c)\\\\.exe)|t(?:racer(?:oute|t)|elnet\\\\.exe|clsh8?|ftp)|(?:w(?:guest|sh)|rcmd|ftp)\\\\.exe|echo\\\\b\\\\W*?\\\\by+)\\\\b|c(?:md(?:(?:32)?\\\\.exe\\\\b|\\\\b\\\\W*?\\\\/c)|d(?:\\\\b\\\\W*?[\\\\\\\\/]|\\\\W*?\\\\.\\\\.)|hmod.{0,40}? ..." at REQUEST_HEADERS:Cookie. Matched signature <; id>"] [severity "CRITICAL"] [hostname "www.larryjostillustration.com"] [uri "/pp/images/buttons.gif"] [unique_id "EQLo1dBuhAQAAHV4WnkAAAAT"]

I'd have try to clear any cookies he has for www.larryjostillustration.com any try again.

The error indicates that it's not the blocked portion is not from the server but from the cookie on his computer.

Marc

Re: [HDBC] "Not Acceptable" Error message from PagePublisher [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there,

That error message actually seems to indicate that the mod_security module that Dave mentioned is responsible for this problem. I attached a file to this post which you can use to disable the module - just upload it to the directory where pp.cgi is located, and then rename it to ".htaccess". Smile

Hey Jake,

Unfortunately the htaccess file doesn't correct the problem. I tried your file as well as a file I created based upon the web page Dave pointed me to.

PP can install fine, but it craps out the first time I try to do anything in the application after logging in.

Re: [HDBC] "Not Acceptable" Error message from PagePublisher [In reply to] Can't Post

Eric,

Unfortunately, there's just not a lot we can do other than recommend you ask your provider to switch off ModSecurity for that directory - or to switch hosts.

The security module your host has installed is like a spam filter that's marking valid mail as spam. It has patterns and filters designed to catch urls that look like they might be security risks, but it's incorrectly catching a Page Publisher url.

I've seen sites before where even specific content entered by the user could trigger things like this. They wouldn't even know what it was or why until it happened. They'd just enter some content and a random phrase or sequence of characters would trigger the filter (and thus the error).

Whether it's some harmless text from Page Publisher that is being mis-identified, or a non-expired cookie as they suggested, or something else... This feature that your host has installed is really just causing way more trouble than it's use. I really hope they're willing to turn it off for you.

I'm really sorry we can't be more help. Hopefully your host will be understanding and take care of this for you.
