Problems with htmlArea in MIE 5.5 Can't Post

I'm using htmlArea in both DocBuilder and AM. It works perfectly on my PC at home running IE 6.0. However, on my PC at work, running IE 5.5 on Windows NT, it has serious problems. When I first click to create a new document or article, or to modify an existing doc/article, the page loads excruciatingly slow, and none of the icons are visible. In the status line in the lower left corner of the browser, it appears that the page is still trying to open for many, many minutes and will give the message, for example, "18 items remaining." Sometimes, if I wait long enough, the page will appear to have been finally loaded, but all the icons (to identify the buttons for bold, italics, hyperlink, etc.) are just broken links.

Short of upgrading IE, which I'm not permitted to do on the work PC, does anyone have any ideas (perhaps in browser settings) that will rectify this?

I have the same problem using the AM demo on the IT site, so it's not related to my installations of htmlArea.

Hi Susan,

Hmmm.. are you using dialup from work? To be honest, there shouldn't be that much difference in speed between 5.5 and 6. Is your 5.5 chock full off extra functionality? (Toolbars, buttons, etc). I once came across an IE browser that a friend was using that had 8 lines of new toolbars, which slowed everything down substantially. I'm wondering if perhaps something along those lines is slowing down your browser...?

Have you tried running the page on a co-workers browser? Presumably they'd be running 5.5 as well.

Hi Benjamin,

We actually have a higher speed ADSL connection at work than I have with my ADSL at home. No extra toolbars -- I have the google toolbar installed both at work and home. I'll try from another PC when I get a chance. I don't know if it makes a difference that we use Windows NT at work, and I use Windows 2000 at home. We are upgrading to Windows XP at some point, so perhaps that will help.

Thanks for the response.

Hi Susan,

To be honest, I'm not really sure what to suggest. I'm going to have a word with one of my co-workers about it tomorrow and see if we can't come up with something. I'll post you back then :-)

Re: [Benjamin] Problems with htmlArea in MIE 5.5 [In reply to] Can't Post

any updates on this? our clients are having similar issues (IE lockup), but i'm not sure if the problem only occurs in IE 5.5.

the page with issues currently has 4 htmlarea form fields (all with different field names), and the editor_gen... javascript calls are all in one js block almost in the bottom of the page. (before closing form tags)

it's hard to gauge what's causing the problem - we've had problems with W2K-SP1 IE 6.0 and W2K SP2 IE 5.5, so i'm not quite sure if it's really the browser version related problem or not. But it works fine on some other systems with same OS, IE version. could this be related to the version of mshtml.dll?

Any response would be appreicated

Susan - try having a quick look at our online demos. Does the WYSIWYG load up slowly & with problems there too? If not, it sounds like it may be (a) a slow connection problem, or (b) a slow server problem.

Yujin - yes, the htmlArea generate() function calls are all grouped together; this was actually done to remove a recurring problem which appeared when there were multiple htmlAreas being drawn to the page. I had a word with a programmer and he admits it's a difficult problem to pinpoint. It may well be possibly be the version of the mshtml.dll file, like you suggest.

One thing you could to try is to create a simple web page with a single htmlarea and see if there are problems in loading that...
