search sort order Can't Post

We have lists of products for several categories and would like a master list produced by a search so that we don't have to list every product again in one big category (to use the headlines call).

I'm trying to make the product list across categories come up in alphabetical order by Title even though the Sort Order fields in the Setup Options use a different field (not Title). We must have Product Code override Title for the individual categories, so can't change that in the Setup Options.

Here's what I've come up with so far, using the categories shown in this tag, but can't figure out how in the heck to force an alphabetical by Title result:

a href="/cgi/artman/exec/search.cgi?template=index/products.html&perpage=400&start=1&cat=7,8,9,2,2,25&sort_order=art_title,abc,forward"

Am I even close yet, or is this impossible to do with Article Manager?

Thank you for your help.

Hi there.

Thanks for posting and welcome to the board!

Are you trying to setup one list of articles that pulls in from a specific set of categories and gets ordered based on article title?

This is definitely do-able and the URL you have there looks good to me so that part should be fine.

The sorting is done with those fields you saw in Setup Options so that’s where you’ll want to go. Basically, the fields are sorted based on the first field you see there, and then sorted by the second field (if the first one ends up being equal) and then finally by the third field (if the first two end up being equal). Now, the thing to remember here is that the sorting is a global setting so all your article lists will use these settings.

That includes: index pages, the search results and the Article Editor. So what you’ll want to do is make sure the first field you have here is set to Title and then just move the other options down one. Also, make sure the numeric box is unchecked.

That should get your results coming up in order based on the title field. Give this a shot and let me know what you think Smile.

Re: [ross] search sort order [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you for your quick response.

If I understand you correctly, the answer is No. This is what we feared.

As explained in the initial post, we cannot chage the sort order in the Setup Options. The Product Code is used as primary sort field for all category pages, and using that Setup Option is the only way we can make that happen.

Please confirm if this means that no matter what code we use for a search URL, we are stuck forever with having all products come up in the order designated in the Setup Options for the categories rather than anything we may try to call from the URL.

In short: If we don't change the Sort Order in the Setup Options (and we cannot do that) we will not be able to list products by Title using a search. Is this right?

Thank you for your help.

Hey Ross, I don't mean to pile on questions, but help!

Do all searches, no matter how you structure them, return in category order? I temporarily changed the Sort Order in the Setup Options to start with Title, and the search results still appear to be clumped by category, even without categories designated in the search code and searching by keyword.

Thank you and thanks for your quick response please since we're running around like a bunch of mice on speed trying to get this thing done.

Hi there,

As you surmised, the setup options is the only place to modify the sort order with Article Manager 1. Search results are not grouped by category, though. Can you give me a link to where this happens?

However... Article Manager 2 is now out, and you can publish multiple pages (rather than running crazy search queries) with whatever different sort options you require. :)

Take a look at the [url=http://www.interactivetools.com/products/articlemanager/]new information about Article Manager 2.
