Strange issue with auto-format Can't Post

I have been using AM 1 on several websites for a few years. Since 2004, I do no longer use WYSYWYG, but HTML (prepared with Page Spinner), with auto-format. Auto-format is set as default in my settings. I recently upgraded to 1.41.

Today, instead of opening AM with Safari or Omniweb as usual (I am on Mac), I decided to try to open it with Firefox.

As I chose to create an article, I was surprised to see a WYSYWYG window appearing. Quite perplexing. I attempted to enter my code in the WYSYWYG window, published it, but then realized I had a mixture on my website (it was an article in French, i.e. many accented characters): mostly the code (Latin ISO-1) was missing where needed.

I then returned to Safari. To my surprise, although auto-format was on in the settings preferences, it was off when I checked articles and attempted to test creating new ones.

Fortunately, it did not destroy the formatting of the some 300 articles which are online. But it suppressed the line break as found in auto-format. Now, when I check existing articles, all have auto-format off (despite the fact that I did never checked it off in the settings) and, instead of "the visible" line breaks, I have now breaks appaearing in such a way within a continuous text:

away with him."< br / >< br / >Downing

(I have set up space between the brackets in order to prevent it to auto-format when posting)

OK, not a real problem, what matters is that it didn't remove the line breaks, which would really have been a nightmare, since I am about to move to a new server, and it would have made it impossible to republish my website properly.

However, I am very puzzled by what happened. Since I had used for years now (since my switch to the Mac in 2004) browsers without WYSYWYG capacity for AM, I had not expected such a problem.

There seems to be some issue with Firefox, since just opening AM in Firefox apparently created the problem (I can see no other reason: I had put online three other articles today using Safari, and there was no issue). What is you opinion? And why could it transform in such a way existing articles also when I open them in Safari.

By the way, I noticed in the setup options that art_content and art_summary were still marked as WYSYWYG - it had never been an issue, since I was using non-WYSYWYG enabled browsers. I have now set them to textarea, in case I open AM again with Firefox. Do you feel this should solve the issue? Is there any other advise you would give to me following that small incident, especially since I will move and republish later this month the entire content to a new server?

Thnak you for your comments and advice.

Re: [tribulatio] Strange issue with auto-format [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi tribulatio,

Thanks for the post,

As browsers get updated new features are added, perhaps a new addition to Safari has caused this issue, have you updated anything recently? I actually haven't run across this before so I'm not sure of hand what could be happening. If you'd like to send us support request with a link to your admin page I'll be happy to do some testing on our local mac for you. :)

How does this sound? You can fill out a support request here:

Re: [ChetW] Strange issue with auto-format [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you, Chet! But it seems I have not explained the problem very clearly: the problem was definitely not caused by opening it in Safari - I had opened AM in Safari just an hour earlier, and I have several AM licenses which I usually open in Safari. It is obviously opening AM with Firefox which has caused the issue, probably because I had left WYSYWYG instead of textarea in set up preferences. The only thing which I find strange is that it disabled autoformat, on the one hand, and that it changed the way all existing articles look in AM editor. As I mentioned, not a big issue, since it does not disturb the layout of the published articles and just makes editing existing articles - if needed - slightly more difficult, but I do rarely need to edit existing articles anyway.

It would be difficult for you to test with my website on your local Mac, since it has happened already and can obviously not be reproduced on my website. But maybe you could test on a mocksite: you create two or three mock articles with Safari, auto-format, but having preferences set up to WYSYWYG for article and summary. Then you publish the mock articles, open again the AM interface, but this time with Firefox, publish an article with it, and then see if the same problem happens when you reopen Safari (i.e.: do previously published articles show the line break, or has each enter been replaced by code? if you create a new article, is auto-format still on?).

I just wanted to make you aware of an issue which might affect people using several browsers.

(The only change which I made recently had nothing to do with browsers; it was upgrading AM from 1.31 to 1.41, which worked fine. But it may indeed have been also the cause of the problem.)

I only need an answer to my question, although I think I know it already: is it safe for me to select "textarea" for article and summary in set up preferences, since I do not use WYSYWYG, although WYSYWYG was on until now? I assume it is safe, and even recommended considering the experience which I just had, but I prefer to ask first!

Thank you for your excellent support, as usual!

Re: [tribulatio] Strange issue with auto-format [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there

Thanks for the extra details!

I will try out what you were doing with our Mac and in the meantime, you won't have any problem switching back to a plain text area as that's actually what the system does automatically if you have WYSIWYG selected but use a browser the editor doesn't support.

Keep me up to date with how you are making out Smile.
