Reinstalling gives a problem

Hi guys,
I think I got you guys to install AM for me around a year ago. Great product. Unfortunately our host went down (Demon, UK) and lost the files, aswell as thier own back up. Just trying to reinstall it now.
Seemed to be no problem, but when I come to edit categories or add articles, it gives permission errors like:
'The program cannot create or write to the file:
./publish/category_list1.php (I need to the files to be .php)
Please ask your server administrator to make sure the publish directory and publish file(s) are writable'
They are writable. I checked. Bizarrely, when I ask it to delele a category, its says no due to permissions, but when I go back to the category list, I find it has deleted it anyway?
Can you guys help?
