Publishing subcategories for one category as navigation Can't Post

I have looked through the board and can not find an answer to this question...

Is there a way to publish the subcategories for one of my categories independently of any other categories?

For example, suppose my category architecture looks like this:

Category 1
Sub Category 1A
Sub Category 1B
Sub Category 1C
Category 2
Category 3

And I want to dynamically publish the list of sub categories from Category 1 like this:

Sub Category 1A
Sub Category 1B
Sub Category 1C

Where each links to an index of articles for its respective sub category.

I know I can hard code these but doing it dynamically seems like it would be simple. Am I just missing something? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the post!

Are you hoping to only see those three sub categories when a website visitor is viewing category 1? Or will they see these categories and parent categories when a website visitor is looking at category 1? Once I understand how you'd like things set-up I'll be happy to see what can be done here. :)

Does this help Bob? I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

The first is closest but not quite. We have hard-coded a link to category one on the main nav on the left side of the page. When the index page for category 1 is displayed, we want to display just the sub categories from category 1 in the right column using SSI. We also want to embed those sub categories on all article pages for category 1.

Hope that clears things up.

Thanks
Bob

Hi Bob

Thanks for clearing that up!

What I am thinking here is that you'll want to setup a new publishing rule that will only display the links to those 3 specific categories. To do that, head over to Admin -> Publishing and click on your global menu publishing rule.

Down at the bottom of this page in the advanced commands drop down, select Copy Rule and hit go.

This will make a copy of your rule so you'll need to change a couple things. Here's what you need to change, and my suggestion on what to change it to:

Rule Name: Sub Category List
Rule Description: (special list of categories for right column)

Placeholder Set Name: rightHandMenu

Now, scroll back down on this page and you're going to see a section that lets you select or exclude categories (it's the category Filter). Select Include from the menu there and then select just the three categories you want for this menu.

That will be it. Once you save and publish the rule, you'll be able to have your new menu appear anywhere you like using this include:

<!--#include virtual="$published.rightHandMenu.webpath$" -->

Does that all make sense? Give it a shot and let me know how you make out Smile.

Thanks but I think these are instructions for AM2 and we are in the AM1 forum. Is there a way to accomplish this with AM1?

Thanks
Bob

Hi Bob.

Sorry about that. I had done 11 Article Manager 2 posts in a row so I kinda got stuck in that frame of mind Smile.

Now, the thing here is going to be that I am not sure if there is a way other than hard coding to set this up in Article Manager 1.

Is that still going to work for you?
