Merging categories

Hi, I have a sub category that I want to merge with its parent category. In other words, I have a bunch of articles that need to have the category changed so I can delete the sub category they were previously posted to. How can I do this without editing each article in the sub categories I am to delete? Thanks Blair

Hi Blair, Generally... modifying each category is going to be the easiest way. :) However, if you have a *lot* of articles in this category (say, over 100) you can modify the database directly. You'd want to open it up in a plain text editor (like Notepad -- we use UltraEdit, which is basically a souped up Notepad) and find the section controlling the category number. Then, search & replace on a bit of the database to change it to the new category number. The exact method for this will be dependent on what you've got in your database. Making changes directly to the database can be tricky, so we generally don't recommend it unless you're a pretty advanced user. If you decide to go this route, make absolutely certain you have a full backup! Donna
