I've been running Article Manager on this server for a few years now and haven't made any recent upgrades. Nor have I made any changes to my permissions. A couple of hours ago, I tried to access Article Manager and received the above error prompt, and have been receiving this error consistantly ever since. I can't get into Article Manager, and am hoping someone knows how to get past this.

Hi there. Thanks for posting! There are a few things that could be happening there so if you could send me a support request: https://www.interactivetools.com/support/email_support.cgi I can run some tests and narrow things down. How does that sound? I look forward to hearing from you . ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Thanks Ross. I've done that and am anxiously awaiting a fix. I'm also very impressed with the service that I've received from Interactive Tools over the three years that I've been using your products.

An update ... My web host will not let me run Article Manager, saying that it's too much of a drain on the server. Thus, they have changed the permissions on search.cgi and I don't know what else, so that no one can get beyond the first page, nor can I get into the Article Manager control panel. Both tech supports (my host and Article Manager) seemed very helpful at first, but to no avail. The AM tech support suggested archiving some of my articles (at the end of each year, I've been archiving the previous year, so that the current year would always be available), but of course, I can't archive if I can't get into Article Manager. My web host did let me into the program this morning, but AM timed out without archiving anything (which would have been 2347 articles, cutting my active articles in half, had it worked). So the AM tech support says that I should archive, but AM won't archive. It created the file for 2005 but wouldn't move any articles into it. Oh, I have previously archived 2003 and 2004 so I do know how it works, or how it is supposed to work. I was planning on upgrading to the latest version of AM by the end of the year, but I wasn't planning on doing it yet (nor can I afford to have AM do it for another week, December being a particular problem financially). And I'm very much afraid of upgrading the software myself, especially with the permissions having been changed (not knowing which have been changed, and what the settings are supposed to be). For one thing, I have never in my life found a "simple upgrade" to be simple or an "easy upgrade" to be easy at all. Always, something goes wrong, and if AM won't archive, I can't be sure that it'll upgrade. For another, if it won't archive, I don't know if it'll upgrade, and with the permissions having been changed, I don't know if I can expect things to work as they are supposed to. I know that I should have read the small print, but I had no idea when I bought Article Manager that it was so limited. Had I known that I'd have to archive an article before it was even a year old, and that it wouldn't work when I tried to archive it, I'd have chosen something else. Article Manager is a terrific program, one that I've been very happy with, but I didn't know it was so stunted. The new version might indeed fix that, but I fear that I'll never know. If I crash and burn trying to do an upgrade, there won't be any point in starting over, at least not using Article Manager. Having been down since Saturday, I've already lost most of my traffic and some of my contributors. If an upgrade fails and I lose everything, I'm done with it. This couldn't have happened at a worse time for me.

The reason for the 403 error, by the way, was that my host had shut off access to Article Manager, saying that it was using up more than 70% of the server's resources.

Hi there, I want to assure you that in the hundreds of upgrades we've performed so far, not one of them has had even the slightest bit of data loss -- the way the Article Manager upgrade works, it's simply impossible. The Article Manager 1 files are not touched in any way during the upgrade. It's not a matter of it being an easy upgrade, as some of them can be a bit tricky, although the majority of them run smoothly and quickly... but it is literally impossible for any data loss, since the files are not touched. We've received your request for the upgrade and that will be performed for you ASAP. :) As for the issues with archiving... the archiving in Article Manager 1 is designed to allow exactly what you're trying to do -- have more than the recommended maximum of articles. However, the archiving needs to be used before you've got this many articles -- if you can't access the software reliably, archiving won't work either. Archiving exists for exactly this reason: When you have more live files than the old database system can handle, you can move them off into another database. Currently, you have twice the amount recommended, which is pretty good in itself! But your server simply can't handle the size anymore. This, however, doesn't affect the upgrade. The upgrade doesn't involve running Article Manager 1 -- doesn't touch its data files, the only thing it does is read from the data files and import them into its own database -- leaving the old ones there running along. Since Article Manager 2 has MySQL support, the limitations on the Article Manager 1 database is not there. The timing on this is actually pretty good! If this had happened a year ago, it'd be a lot more work trying to get the archives setup properly (doing it by hand, rather than using the software -- never fun), as Article Manager 2 wouldn't have existed yet. :) But I want to assure you again (sorry if I'm repeating myself, but it's important!) We have NEVER had any data loss with an upgrade. Not with the ones we've done, not with the ones our customers have done: It's simply not possible, the Article Manager 1 files are never touched. Even if it's a tricky upgrade -- and they do happen, I've had a few making me to want to pull out my hair! -- data loss is simply not a concern. "Upgrade" isn't even really the right word -- the process is more along the lines of installing a new software package all together, then importing the data from the previous version. Even the permissions on your current Article Manager are irrelevant -- Article Manager 2 is a completely separate program installed into a completely different directory. It doesn't touch the cgi files at all, only the dynamic data. :) I hope this helps clear things up about how the upgrade will go. Let me know if you have any other concerns -- but I am 100% confident that there will be absolutely no data loss whatsoever, even if anything weird DOES pop up with your upgrade. :) Donna

Donna, thank you for your reply. I am looking forward to the upgrade. A couple of questions (actually, only one in mind as I'm typing this but I always think of something else so I thought I'd prepare the way for it) ... Will version 2 be able to archive files created in version 1? By this, I mean that, since my 2005 articles were created in version 1 - which won't archive them - will I be able to archive them using version 2? Will there still be a need to archive articles using version 2, considering that we create a few thousand articles in a year? It's not a problem to do so, as long as it'll make it through the end of a year before I have to archive the previous year. 2003 worked, as did 2004, but I guess we've gotten more prolific.

Hi there :) Version 2 no longer has archiving. Since the archiving was created to allow you to have more articles in separate databases, and since Article Manager 2 can handle more articles *without* separating the databases, archiving was removed from this version. The upgrade process will, of course, bring in all of the archived articles as well. So, there will be no need to archive anything. The only reason you can't currently archive anything is because there are too many live articles, and your server isn't able to handle the load with the type of database Article Manager 1 used. In Article Manager 2, we'll switch you to MySQL, which does away with that limitation. :) Donna
